A file 6 dollar walmart file set would be the cheapest way. Another way is to pay a locksmith to cut them for you if you can find one who will do them. another way is to buy depth keys from ebay and use only the number 9 key.
What type of bump keys you looking to buy?
I have a large set and can tell you they are only useful for higher security locks. Locks like kwicksets weisers arrows and such are picked just as quickly.

Can bump keys be made for autos? If not, why not? Also, does it matter what kind of file is used to make them?

No you cant bump vehicles as they are mostly wafers and you cant bump wafers because they get bent and damage the lock.
Stay away from vehicles and concentrate on cylinders.

Yep...if you make nice with your local locksmith, hey may code-cut some bumpkeys for you.
Right before a presentation, I managed to severely damage my bumpkey and my local lockie code-cut a 10-10-10 Schlage key for me within minutes.
Of course, not all locksmiths will be willing to do this, but it certainly wouldn't hurt.
From a learning standpoint though, you will get the most out of the experience if you make them with some blanks and some files.

Yes, for a final exam we had to find a physics topic to talk about and give a 10-minute presentation about. I decided I was going to talk about kinetic engergy and impulses, and how they related to locks. I had brought some really neat demonstrations with me and needless to say, I had the students' full attention!
At the end of the presentation, I also noted that anyone who would be interested in learning more about locks would be welcome to attend some LSI meetings when they started up next semester.

I ordered "9 keys" or un-prepared bump keys from this guy, they seem to be good quality. They come in sets of 2 and you have to order at least 5 sets (a total of 10 keys). When you get them, give each cut a stroke or two with your file, then file down the shoulder and tip as usual. It's worked well for me so far! Might be something to think about. It Kinda takes the learning experience and challenge out of making bump keys if you ask me.
anyways here is the site:

Yes it is. I've got 10 keys from him as well. Got what I asked for, came on time. Good guy. I'm not sure if he's still selling them or not tho.

found a locksmith to cut me some. since a 7 depth cut is the deepest for a kwikset, is that what i should be using for a bump key?

In this case, yes. Although I've found that going 1/2 or 1 cut deeper will sometimes help. I would try experimenting with a 7.5 cut or an 8 cut and see which one you have the best luck with.
