Best Lock...working on a key

Postby h3x1lu2 » 10 Apr 2006 18:01

I have a Best mortice lock without a key...so I'm trying to make one for it, but I can't tell what type of keyway it is...I found it in a second hand store...I was thinking type "L" but the blanks I ordered, didn't fit...any ideas?

Try H. Its my best guess, but your picture is a bit fuzzy.

Your picture is really too fuzzy and dark to see the specifics of the keyway. If you take a better picture, we might be able to help you.

Sketch

I sketched the keyway so there is no possibility of blurry-ness or shadows

It's hard to get a good close up pic of the key way without being blurry. :)

Sketches aren't going to help out a whole lot because there are some very very subtle differences between certain keyways that will not come through in a rough sketch. If your camera doesn't have a macro function (usually denoted by a picture of a flower) then take the picture as close as you can while still keeping it crisp, and just crop it. The key is LIGHTING. ;-)

It looks like a "double letter" complex keyway, not one I've really seen around too much - I'll check ilco and see if I can match it up...

It's not H - I deal quite a bit with H and know it when I see it - H looks a lot like F - that picture and sketch has an extra "tang" in the middle-bottom-left part that couldn't be H...

http://www.kaba-ilco.com/key_systems/pd ... _Alike.pdf

it's on the top right...it looks a bit similar...let me know what you find/think

I've spent a ridiculous amount of time on this lil problem...I can't figure this out...ilco had no info...is this a topic for the advanced boards here?

I'm probably off on this, but the best I could tell from the pic. it looks like there's a 1A1J1-NS, that would fit it...here's the catalog link JetKeys. The keyway pics are a bit clearer so maybe h3x1lu2 might have a better guess from here.

Best Keyway

Postby medicman151 » 19 Apr 2006 0:22

It looks like a "TB" keyway. We use these at work.

Hmm, the one you posted already looks pretty similiar to me,
not sure about the bottom part, as it cannot be seen exactly on the photo.
But nevertheless, my guess is that the 1A1J1-NS blank would fit..
