Do you have a certain pick for a certain lock?

Just wondering if you have certain picks that work well with certain brands of lock.

If so, have you got pictures of said picks?

The reason i'm asking, is that i've made myself various picks, some work better than others in certain circumstances.

For instance, I made a totally random pick with my bench grinder and wiper wire.....It doesn't resemble the key at all with its peaks and dips, yet all i have to do is pop it in, lift it up about half a milimeter, and the lock will pop open!

Its a 5 pin abus 60/50 which apparently has a couple of spool pins thrown in for fun.

Should i be surprised? Or should i go and get another lock of the same make and model and try it with that?

What you're experiencing is what all of us have experience one time or another. That is- stick a random shaped rake pick in the cylinder, and with little effort, the lock opens.

It sounds like your doubting your skill level, and that's to be expected in this particular situation and lock and pin arangement. But, you need to also realize that you're on the shore of one type of excepted picking process.

Most die hard lock pickers prefer to open locks pin-by-pin with feeler picks. It has more of a scientific aproach and is more reflective of one's skill level. To some, rake picking is somewhat random and requires less skill level. I feel like I'm in the driver's seat when picking pin-by-pin, but sometimes rake picking works and shouldn't be under-estimated.

Intago, my mate nicked my digital camera to put some crap on Ebay, I'll have to swipe it back tomorrow and take a picture (and a video of me picking) as my nokia camera is a bit erm.....rubbish lol

My mate thought he'd have a go at picking with my favorite pick whilst i was in the bath, upon my return i found the pick in two peices!

I tried making another to the same profile, and its nowhere near as good.

Yep, picks break sometimes, and thats why the majority of mine are not used by someone else.

Well i learnt the lesson the hard way I'm making him some picks tomorrow, he has access to infinate wiper wire

Yep, when ever i try n get a friend to have a go i cringe as they bend the tension wrench round the lock and i end up with a banana shaped rake back.

Then again i don't make my own picks so its only about 80ps worth of kit there gonna damage and after seeing the joy on a friends face when i showed him how 2 pick a single locked handcuff its worth getting friends involved in the end.

if you fill it about half-way with marbles or ball bearings, then wire the ends shut, i've found that it typically provides a little more incentive to leave the tools alone.
