I'm getting a kwickset maximum security, because i can't find a faultless and there are a lot of threads that recomend it as a begginers lock. I called lowes, and for a single deadbolt they want $22.99 most of the posts talked about buying one for around ten dollars.

Home Depot has a Quickset "knockoff" that uses the same keyway. The single deadbolt runs about $12.00 US.
The name on the lock (and key) is Defiant. Be careful, the brass scratches easily

The thread topic sort of hit a nerve with me. Just because a store is selling something that is a bit higher than you expected, doesn't mean it's a ripoff. Any business has a right to price their merchandise at whatever price they need to in order to make a profit. Some of course are priced higher than others. Kwikset has a number of deadbolts available ranging in MSRP from $20 to $60+.
The most common is the 660 and 665 of which the MSRP is about $20 and are commonly found for around $15. Out of curiosity, I went to Loew's website and they carry all of the kwikset deadbolts, with the 660 selling for $14.97 which is right in line with normal pricing for this lock. Pick it up at your local store and you don't even have to pay for shipping!!!

Brinks makes a deadbolt which uses a kw1 key, so it would be the same as actually buying a kwikset, but for about $10.
Also Brinks sells a housekey padlock which can be keyed the same as your kwickset door lock. So this is the same as having a kwickset in a padlock. Its awesome to learn on since it comes with everything you need to rekey it over and over.

you can get the brinks products at wal-mart and all of their products use the KW1 keyway. also if your interested i am selling a few LSDA brand 6 pin cylinders for $4.50 a peice plus shipping. if you buy two or more i will throw in some pins and a plug follower for you. they are actually better quality then kwikset but great for learning. if you are interested PM me and i might be able to work out a deal for you depending on where you live. you can see my thread on the cylinders
(sorry for the shameless plug but i thought it was an appropriate offer for this guy)

Part of the reason for price increases on locks is the fact the brass has gone way up on cost. Even keyblanks have risen in cost for locksmiths considerably.
Scrap brass is being sold to scrap dealers for around $1.85 per pound.
By the way, Defiant is an inferior lock to Kwickset, same keyway or not.

Are there locks inferior to Kwikset?

I bought a Kwikset Deadbolt at Ace Hardware for USD$14 after taxes, which would make it around $12 before taxes.
About the cheapest price I have encountered here in my area.

Frnkly, if I were to walk into the Home Depot to chose a lock, I would buy the Kwikset Ultra Max over the Schlage "F".
Schlage "F" has already run into some problems with their latches and I see more problems coming with their exposed springs in the bible due to the floating spring cover.
Also, whe it comes to master-keying, you can still safely master-key the Kwicksets, but the new Schlage "F" series are not made to be master-keyed.

OUCH OUCH OUCH!
Your taxes must suck. Do you have to take out a seperate for the taxes when you buy a car?
In my hometown of evanston a $12 lock would have been 12.60 with taxes, and here it would still only be 12.65

Schlage quality has been going into the toilet ever since Ingersol-Rand bought them. Its bad, and only getting worse.
Right now, its to the point where I don't even want to carry them because of the outrageous price and poor quality.
I would be much happier installing any LSDA SC1 keyed lock in place of a Schlage, even if I have to special pin the thing.

Same here, Romstar, LSDA or USCAN - either one with SC1 keyway.
Bu when it comes to Home Depot with the new "F" series, and I didn't have access to LSDA or USCAN, I would go for the Kwickset Ultra Max, which is the newer version of the Titan ove the "F"
