Make friends with locksmith

A locksmith was here putting pushbutton locks on all the outer condo doors. You know I had to ask, and I did receive:
11 deadbolts, 2 Abloy, tool box type lock, 2 NIX-PIX keys, 2 handfulls of Ace type lock keys, 2 Kwikset Titan keys with control key, bunch of safe deposit keys and a master padlock. He let me just dig what I wanted out of a 5 gallon bucket. I was very much wanting a couple more deadbolts.
He was going to let me have it all for free but I gave him $20.00 and we're both happy. It may have been junk to him but it was a goldmine for me. I making a locksmith friend. He sais he was going to bring me something by later about picking.

you gotta go and ask. we chuck thousands of locks / keys a month for pure scrap value, 99% are boring locks but not for someone whos starting up. Howerer if someone came into the shop and said they pick locks for fun can i have a load i would be very nervious. not the kind of thing i like to hear in 'my' local area, but if you explain yourself you should gain trust

Funny, I was about to post something similar to this. I called up one of the local locksmiths:

"Hi, this is an odd question, but do you have any key-in-knob doorknobs, or old deadbolts laying around that you could get rid of?"

He asked if I needed any keys with them, (Nah, that kinda defeats the purpose...), and told me to come get a few. Went in, and he gave me a box with about 10 different key-in-knob doorknobs, as well as some pretty nice deadbolts. I know at least 1 is a 7 pin bolt, and I think there's a 6 pin in there as well. Just got done mounting some of the deadbolts in a practice stand I just recently built, as well.

Yah people are more then happy to get rid of their junk. Which is an awesome find to us.

WiseMan1842 don't get your hopes up at the hardware store. I have asked for kwikset springs and in so many words they say go away. And I know they have them. I could just take them if I wanted, but thats not cool. They leave their repin kit just sitting next to their key cutter.

Anyway I find loads of locks at yard sales. $2 and under so far. Even some for free..

Can't hardly believe it. The locksmith came back this evening and handed me some literature in a little baggie. We talked awhile, I mean I listened awhile. He told me how to defeat the mushroom pin, (feedback from the tension wrench moving back). When I got back inside and opened the baggie I found two new picks and a double ended wrench. The picks are spring steel with stainless handles marked HPC Inc.
We have to get together again to talk about the safe lock parts he has.

Nice find. I usually ask people at yard sales if they have any old locks they want to get rid of. I offer to payt for them but sometimes I get em for free.

It is amaving how many more flies you can catch with honey instead of vinegar.

You're so fortunate. Maybe if I approach a locksmith and show them my locksmith ID I got from The National Locksmith they'll be more likely to be friendly to me.

I would think a locksmith might not be inclined to help someone that might become a competor but if you mention LP101 and explain it's a hoppy kind of like doing puzzles. I think most peope like to help but it's important to be a good listener.

im a little hesitent to go to my local lockies. since im only 17 i think it would look really suspicous. but i might try it anyways. and yardsale season opened up with a bang here so ill probably check some of those out.
