Thank you for straightening out this thread. Some people can be immature.

People actually caring a lil bit about what information is posted on the site and a safety first attitude is not immature, but rather very mature. I realize it may seem a bit much when there are lots in a row but it only shows people care.

Now having said that... I can still understand why someone would want to know how to pick these weird locks. The whole reason to me of picking is just the simple knowledge and challenge of doing. I for one want the knowledge of as many locks as possible.

However, lets say that instead of people posting all the warnings, someone just answered the question flat out. Along comes a young person who just happens upon this website. They read how to do it, and think hey I wanna try that. They do and get themselves electrocuted or arrested. I dont think anyone would want that on their head.

Please dont take this as a putdown or chastising. I am only trying to provide a perspective as to why so many have posted warnings. More than anything else just trying to keep it fun and safe for everyone. :)

I talked about it with my dad.
As soon as he heard me mention boxes in the public of whatever kind, he harshly told me to stay away from em.
In holland, if you try to pick whatever kind of box (electrical/telecom controll/whatever), you get cops on the spot in a few minutes.
Seems these things are monitored over here.

Indeed.

No kidding though, my dad works for a major dutch telecom company, and it seems that every electricity box and telecom hub they rely on is monitored 24/7.

Picking locks that aren't yours might develop bad habbits.

Tact, ethics, and proffesionalism tend to be what leads to better understanding in any field. There is a world of difference concerning "I found an old key, or saw one, what is it" vs. "Hey how do I get this open?"

I don't mean carefull wording so much as flat out intent staring at you in the face. Granted someone can discover lock picking and want to open everything in sight till they calm down, but its easy to drown learning how to swim.

I thought about how nice it would be to have some additional window that you have to go through after it sees the word safe or something about to be posted, but nothing would work.

I think the point is being missed,

If we told how to pick these lock (a competant picker should be able to work it out by themself) then its not nessacary the OP we worry about when we say no info here, if the OP is a trusted member they will still get no unless its in the advanced section and this is for one very important reason,

This section is in the public part that means if you wasnt going to do any harm with it either by breaking the law and opening one some kid with an idea visiting the site could,
We have to think about the others that are going to read these answers not just the OP getting theirs,

Im sure a rule of the site is discussion of illegal activity is not allowed and yet you continue to argue the case for answers to your questions,

I say its not us (the ones who have spoken up) that are the immature ones 8)

ok, let me go on record by saying I agree w/ all of you. He doesn't need to be picking anything that he doesn't own. It would be exceptionally stupid to try and get into this type of box for not just ethical reasons, but also personal safety.

This being said, I think that he was just more or less stumped by the configuration of the lock. I didn't read into what he said that he wanted to get into the box, more or less just how does that type of lock work. If I am wrong then I am wrong, but I got the impression that this was for only imformational purposes, and not for practical entry.

I think that it would be a good practice for each of us to try and post original reply's to help contribute to the subject, and not just jump on the band wagon and regurgitate what the person before us posted. This is not an attack on anyone!!!! I really mean this, no hard feeling to ANYONE here. I just remember how I felt when I first joined, and tried to ask a question and got tons of replys that all said the same thing and I felt like I was getting the step-child treatment.

Ok, enough bs "feeling" talk. lets end it with a joke.

I hear what you are saying.....that doesn't mean I agree with you....Just that I am nodding my head to placate you and silence your futile attempts to win the argument.

I would prefer 99 people to reply with the same answer than get 99 differant replies, that would really mess the op up,

I thought he wanted to know how to open or pick the lock not to get in the box but for interest sake but it would still mean someone would come on and explain it that would satisfy the op's thirst for knowledge except others could also see it in which they may not use the info quite as maturely, thats what the advanced section is for.

I think there are enough other locks that are interesting enough and puzzleing enough that could quench the thirst of knowledge for a noob and yet not get peoples guard up by asking how to open them.

The responces were better than the alternitive which is only in the advanced section, thats another often used phrase, what would you rather we do? lie and make up some story or come up with some original comments that still amount to the same thing? we have to reply not only to the OP but also any future people who may also read the thread and by not saying there can be no comeback.

The obvious answer then is to say you move some objects to a shearline and when all the objects of the lock are at the shearline and the plug turned the lock will open.

What would you say to a kid asking how to open a coke machine? dont do it? you cant do it? its illegal? its only discussed in the advanced section? (yes coke machine locks etc are discussed there), what do you say? especially when its the 00000'th poster to aske the same question.

I think the answers were justified and quite apt to both the OP who now knows he shouldnt be thinking such thughts to the unjoined visiter thats surfing the net to do illegal things.

boy was i flamed on this post. Sorry if any1 was offended and I would like to say in my defence that I never imagined actually opening a box and fooling with it, it's just common sense. Being an amature I thought I had discovered an unpickable lock and was excited. Know I know any person with the right tool can open it because the locks are not individual like dead bolts and such. :| I promise there will be no reckless idiotic acts breaking the law.

I dont think you have been flamed and i think only a slight warming has been issued by a few anyway, its more the ones who objected to you not receiving the full answer you requested that should now be a bit warmer.

You asked a resonable question and took the answer, fine.

Actually these are the ' right tools '. The key for the Abloy style pin lock with rotating disks and a sidebar ( picture on right ), or the plunger style ' key ' where the tip of the plunger spreads apart slightly to activate the mechanism inside the pin ( picture on left ). Cable TV boxes use either style pin lock, depending on what city you're in. The electric companys use mostly the plunger variety which comes in various sizes, depending on the city. In other words my cable tv plunger ' key ' will not fit in the electric box pin lock because they're smaller pin locks. Reference : www.inner-tite.com/

If any of you care to look, you will find that the question was answered by the 4th post to this thread. The first link in the reply was to verify if in fact that was the lock that the OP questioned. I was not able to find a close-up of the actual tool so thats why I added the second link to show a tool that is very similar to the ones used to open this lock. The second link shows a nice close-up. The internal functions of the lock were also briefly explained so to give the OP a clue on how these things work.

I think I'm writing this because I'm feeling left out and totally ignored. Oh well, I'll get over it.
It is far better to remain silent and be thought of as stupid, rather than opening your mouth and removing all possible doubt.

Utility Company Barrel Lock

Postby hotdjdave » 3 Mar 2006 16:24

What's funny is the OP wants to know how to open (pick) the lock, presumably without a key, and no one has answered that question sufficiently except for Einzee.
