I have never tried it, but I remember reading about stuffing dental floss into the keyway to keep the pins set and then turning it the right way. It sounds much more tedious than using a plug spinner, but if you don't have one, maybe it's an option. My guess is that waxed floss would be bettter than plain, but that's just a guess.

always assume clockwise is the direction to pick in unless you happen to know different. 90% of locks will turn clockwise, closer to 100% of padlocks. probably something to do with us right handers ruling the world.
