I have just got my first set of lock picks not more than 2 weeks ago and most of my practice was spent on padlocks. A few days ago though, i bought a deadbolt cylinder to practice on and i think its almost essential when you are a beginner, to learn on a deadbolt. When i am picking a padlock, i find it very difficult to find a binding pin, so i mostly just fiddle around with the pins until eventually the lock will open. I think deadbolts are much easier to develop your skills, as you can easily feel which pin is binding, and tell which pins have been set.
