I am trying that method with a homemade pick and tension wrench, when i get a real lock pick will that be much different than the homemade one, meaning will i have to start back at 1 pin again to work my way up with the real pick?

I've got a question and hopefully someone can answer it for me:

I'm making good progress using a board with locks containing increasing numbers of pins, and started thinking about it's usefulness when my technique's improved. Specifically I was wondering if you can use the pyramid method for other styles, e.g. practicing with a plug spinner, pick guns or even impressioning?
I hope this isn't a dumb question, and and I think it is possible, but I was wondering if anyone knew or had any success trying it.

it should, I don't see why it wouldn't work. Afterall, you have to start soemwhere, and that will be the easiest way to start.

Mattc: I've done this with impressioning, it works, the best thing is, you can put one pin in, and if you know that pins relative position on the keyblank, you can easily spot the marks... sure it makes it simple to do one pin.. BUT! it trains you for what you are looking for on the key blanks.

Phenicx and Guitar_J, thankyou. I'll restrain myself until I've managed the 5 pin lock and feel ready to have a go with impressioning etc. I'm glad that I can use the board for techniques other than manual picking.
By the way, I've noticed that I only need a tiny amount of torque to get the pins to set- just putting a 10cm long turning tool (made with a street sweeper bristle) in the keyway and letting it hang by its own weight is enough. Would anyone care to comment if this is unusual?

To be honest, I haven't progressed as far as being able to pick 4 pins and up reliably, and I can use more torque and still pick. It seems to be a small flaw I've found.

Actually, hanging your hand by its own weight is way more than you should be using I recommend just resting a finger on the tension wrench until it just shows the slightest bit of pressure, and then trying to pick it. If that is not enough, slowly increase the pressure until you can get the pins to lift and stay lifted. The goal is to use the least amount of tension as possible, as that makes it easier to pick.
