Just be normal, strike up a conversation about how neat locks really are and tell them that you are learning to pick locks as a hobby. Be honest, don't BS someone that knows a heck of a lot more about the subject than you do. Don't toss around a lot of fancy lock names because honestly, we rarely see them and like it that way.
Most of us that do this for a living care more about the money making aspect than the warm and fuzzy of getting a plug to turn. Yeah, warm and fuzzy is nice, but $100+ per hour is much nicer.
