i have found that when buying large sets of picks from lockpicktools.com they come with duplicates. i like that, some people dont but anyone will tell you that in buying large sets you'll only use a few southords larger sets have no duplicates but the picks are very similar.. but lockpicktools.com has those great ripple handles for less than southords standard handles.. but with my squiggley obsession aside just find what set you want and check both sites for the cheaper deal. both sites use 440 stainless

I agree with the suggestion for Peterson picks. You can get a couple individual picks ( http://www.peterson-international.com/individualpicks-detailed.htm ), and then a few tension wrenches, and you're all set, for very little $.
Why buy 10-12 low quality picks, when you can buy one or two decent ones? I figure, it's better to get a nice diamond pick with a comfortable handle, and then just start practicing techniques.

LockPicktools.com is the way to go I think for purchasing all your needs.
I've looked around alot comparing prices but LockpickTools has a very good REP and other places might only beat some prices by a few pennies.
I rather stay with the good quality tools and REP company, Im not saying others dont have good quality and Rep also, its just Ive always been partial to LockPickTools.

I don't understand why tools made by SouthOrd and Lockpicktools are almost unequivocally suggested to beginners when an effective set of Peterson/HPC/Rytan etc tools can be had for a price that is very negligibly different.
Because they are both very good sets. I bought the Falle pick set that sells for around £150 and although it's a fantastic set, I honestly prefer the S/O for sheer simplicity. I polished up my S/O nine piece set and it was coped with every lock I've come up against - All this for such a darn cheap price!
I'm not putting down the Falle picks, because they are a very good set, but for a tenth of the price - the S/O set are very satisfying.
Oh yeah, and lockpickshop.com gives you a 10% discount - seems silly not to use them unless you want a set of picks that they don't sell.

I agree with shrub that we should be supporting the site sponsor. I do however think that we should be supporting lockpicktools also as they have opened their doors to the locksport community and allowed a full tour of their facility for the NDE magazine schuyler is putting out. In my opinion, Rich would be more than happy to become a site sponsor but that is ultimately up to him and Mr. Picks.
I am one who will support those who support the community. The site sponsor does so and so does lockpicktools.com. My next pick set will be purchased from Rich at lockpicktools.com simply due to the fact that he opened the doors to his business for the locksport community. That resulted in myself having alot of respect for his company.
Personally I love peterson tools. I use them almost exclusively as most of you have seen in my videos. Fact of the matter is that anymore I dont like the fact that I have to unlock 6-10 home lockouts just to pay for my pickset. The peterson stuff I have right now is all that I will own simply because the cost is so high anymore. Not 3 years ago, I bought petersons Tri Fold set which is different than what it is now BUT IIRC the set cost me $65. That should show you the amount of price increase that peterson has implimented. In my opinion they are the best picks I have used and when I am asked what picks I think are best I say Peterson. On the other hand, I can open just as many doors with a set that costs 25% of what my petersons cost. If anyone from peterson is reading this, I mean no disrespect as your tools are wonderful. My choices anymore have just come down to whether my family wants to eat ramen noodles for a week so I can buy a set of peterson picks or if we want to eat hamburgers one of those nights and buy a cheaper set of tools.

Petersons picks are very nice and well made, but I do agree with you zeke they are quite pricy, I too have a family and have to watch the spending as well.

Sponsor or not, Thread starter asked for a community oppinion on one of two options. Community responded. Shrub wrote:i write this as the last two posts sound like an advert for said company
The two posts you refered to gave their honest oppinions relating to the question posed.

Clown your entitled to your opinons but without the advantage of the knowledge i have on the subject of spam and people advertiseing companies in a sneeky way i respectfully tell you that i think your misguided,
That said its nothing to me at all, i was merely making comment which the same as you i am entitled to do, its not worth fighting about,

I got Southord c1510 set, 15 pieces, 40 euros
I been picking for about a month with these and I have already found need for different kind of tensiontools and smaller picks for small locks.
Selfe custom is I think still the best way to get exactly what you need, expecially the tension tools. But if your really interested on picking buy better than the avarage tools to get started! There is nothing more frustrating than learning a new skill with bad tools, what ever it is. I suggest not to be me and spend 40euros on picks since you will grown out of them in few weeks.

I would happily recommend LockPickTools for the very reasons Zeke mentioned.
If Mr. Picks wants to drop me an email about it I will append this statement at a later time, but as I've yet I've never spoken to the man.
