Do it!

And tell us what happens. This is an easy enough modification to make to a lock, and I am HONGRY for some lock mods.

ok! ill do it tionight and see what happens. I too was wondering if the pins would simply tilt and catch on the underside of the sheer line.

Anyway, ill start on the lock mod now and let you guys know later on :)

uh... ok so i did it and made the adjustments variously wide. When i tried to pick it, what was once a much easier lock became a lot harder, tho i did manage to get 3 out of 5 pins.

It occurred to me though that because I had to widen the gap where the sheer line is in order to create that "slippyer lip" that the top pins rest on, that more keys might more on the lock than before, as theres a larger threshold for the hight of the pin to be pushed up.

Unfortunatly i was unable to test this too as when i went to pull the key out (which worked fine) id forgotten to hold the plug in and it all came out hi pins low pins and springs. I managed to find every bit except for 1 pin which has probably sprung to some distant corner of my room. so i cant completly put it back together.

My conclusion is that if the socket for the pins is widened adequetly then it will be extremely difficult if not impossible to pick. I couldnt get those pins to stay up at all. However I suspect there will be a higher tolerance for key varients.

I am sure there are some far superior lock pickers out there that could prove me wrong and do a better job of this experiment.

Ah, I understood wrong. In that case that does seem like a good idea. Raimundo mentioned beveled bottom pins, but perhaps -taking example from tubular locks- rounded drivers would be even harder to pick (although that might require bigger step sizes between cuts and therefore a smaller amount of possible cuts).

Ah glad to see my theoretical issuses shown wrong :) the key still worked as well as normal? I think I read that right. Good stuff.

Though I have not tried this, to me it seems as though the lock would end up easier to pick as long as the beveled area of the plug was not at too shallow of a degree. The other problem I see is that IF you put too big of a cone on the plug then when you turn the key, the driver pins can fall down beside the key pins and cause a lockout situation. Even if this does not happen, the driver pins will always fall into the coned area a bit and will cause massive wear over time which will result in a groove developing on the plug. Maybe I am missing something with what you are doing (or completely misunderstood) or maybe I just need to try it myself.
