Some locks require 4 digit combinations so may open LRLR or RLRL, plus some other locks require 3 digit combos then for you to turn back to 0, so LRL R0.

You can generally create a longer dialing sequence if you wish, its probably not recommended.

Hmm... discovered the concept of dialing tolerances... and reduced the dialing to 33x33x1 all by yourself! Good job.

Yes... Almost all mechanical combination locks can be dialed in either direction.

No... My approach is different, but I really can't discuss my technique as it is designed for 20th century models and probably wouldn't have worked on this one anyway :) .

What you learned, is by having someone point you to the correct public resources and caused you to think about something you already knew but couldn't quite visualize on an exposed and open safe.

No... we don't buy safes just to practice the locks... locksmiths typically attend training seminars to learn about specific new models of locks.

I want to personally thank everyone for not chastising me when I referredto the first and second digit combination wheels of the Spectra42's safe as #2 and #3 when I should have said #1 and #2.

I have the same(or very, very close) safe!

I spent a long time trying to figure out mine, and eventually succeeded. However, i don't think it's permissable to type a whole tutorial here (might be a special access thing) but here are some basic pointers:

-Yes, howstuffworks.com did write an article on that... but your safe is an older kind. That techn. most likely won't work on yours.

-This is probably a known fact, but to get the last no. in the comb. you turn the dial 5x to the left, and on the first turn right there's a click. That's it.

-Finally, put pressure on the tumblers with the opening handle and see what you come up with while turning.

That's all I can really say here. If you experience difficulty or i didn't explain well enough, pm me.

Note to the Admin.:
How much info. am i allowed to give out on a guest forum? :?

as much as you would feel comfortable telling a guy that might be standing outside your house and could possibly break in.

Other than that, we will edit it if to much info is posted.
