Its a normal tumble lock and the other side is just a thing where u turn it 90 degrees to lock/unlock the handle. Any ideas? Its my bathroom door if that helps.. a golden door knob.

Hi Vandelay

Are you in the States? I'm intrigued. Why would you have a knob on the bathroom door with a key turn on the outside?

Cheers...

Sorry about the year late reply. No im not in the states, im in Australia haha. The part where you lock it is on the inside the picture i posted was just an example. ie the keyhole is on the outside

Hi...welcome back and thanks for posting a reply :D

I understood that the thumbturn (as shown in the image) is on the inside, that's what I'd expect on a bathroom door. However, I don't know why you'd have a keyturn/key hole on the outside. You wouldn't need to lock a bathroom door unless you're in it! In the case of locking handles like the one in the image, there would usually just be an emergency release hole/plunger on the outside. I've never seen a bathroom door with a lock that can be locked with a key from the outside (apart from old lever lock doors which by design have keyholes on both sides).

Cheers...

They are special locks called "institutional privacy" where the exterior access is controlled so not just anyone can open the bathroom door with a coin or something pointy that fits in the emergency hole...

Institutional privacy function locks are designed so that the key operates the latch no matter what has been jammed into or against the button or thumb turn on the inside of the lock set...

There used to be a Weiser/Falcon series that would pick like you described-if I remember correctly the tip of the key needed to push a piece in to engage a mechanism that would allow rotation of the cylinder to unlock the button on the inside. E530?? Some of you old folks help me out here with model number.

Right, but the OP said it was their bathroom door lock. I found it strange that such a lock would be fitted in a private house so either it's an HMO with shared bathroom (though I haven't seen such a lock fitted in these premises) or it's an 'institutional' building of some sort. No photo of the actual lock/door forthcoming so without any insult to the OP I felt a tad uneasy about helping someone to open it. The fact that the OP came back dilutes my concerns a bit.

Cheers...
