All I can say is thank you very much! When you have become discouraged at picking like I was and find a tutorial like this, it helps a great deal. It's basically a lesson in the way locks work and of course, how to learn to pick them.

Again, thank you very much! :D

Now I need a tutorial on searching!

Thanks Marco....I had seen that tutorial but when I typed "picks" in the search box, I would get something like "No topics found"...... But now when I try "picks*" (with the asterisk), I get a ton of stuff. I don't know why but it doesn't matter now that I can get some results. Thanks for the reply and the link. I'm hooked on this stuff now! :D :D

By the way, I've been on the forum for about a week and never got past the tutorials. Lot's of help!

unfortunately the search function isn't quite working at the moment so it doesn't quite make things easy for people. What you can do, however, is use google site search. in google, type in what you are trying to search for followed by site:www.lockpicking101.com. For example, if I was looking for info on 'schlage' i would type into google:
schlage site:www.lockpicking101.com

And its great to see that you have been reading all the tutorials and stickies, and also trying to search! You are the ideal noob to this site. If only they were all like you then this site would be a much better place.

Welcome to the site!

Before you pick a lock:
The first thing that you should do is check to make sure that
the lock is your's and secondly make sure its not in use.

Just wanted to say thanks d_b for an excellent excercise that showed me exactly how to find the binding pin and what I was doing wrong when trying to pick the deadbolts I had been practicing on.

I started off with one pin, went to two and a spool, and then just went straight back to the 4 pin and a spool deadbolt with no pins removed. Now I can pick them consistently.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the exercise d_b, it takes time but it's absolutely worth it :-)
My two cents about repinning :
I bought half a dozen EU locks (1 or 2 euro each on the local flea market - if you have no flea market I assume every local locksmith -wherever you may live- has stacks of old locks) and cut them in two so to have two identical locks.
Then I removed all pins and started combining them.
For example :
an AGB (italian made lock, very professional, almost identical to CISA locks) had two normal pins and three spool pins each.
Not too difficult to repin one of the two locks with four normals pins and a spool one, and then three normal, two spool, etc etc.
The CISA locks (bought two, very well machined, for the huge amount of 2€ both :-) ) have ONE normal, three spool and a serrated pin.
So choices are almost endless, as you can imagine.
Now, all this great theory, but I wish I could open the CISA I repinned with ONE normal and ONE spool... ;-)
Photos on request, of course... all the best, wish me luck ;-)

Just wantedt o say thank you for suggesting the exercise,...even though it wasn't directly to me. Still working on it, but I'm having problems now with the 4th pin. Wondering if my homejob pick is not up to the task.

Instead of using up space, i'll just ask here.....
Could someone recommend a link that will give me some good...(already sized) picks that i can make. I'm having a problem when it comes to sizing up photo's.
Thanks again
And thank GOD for this site!
