Short and simple, by what you want. There all the same, both wont open locks any faster.
Its just personal taste. I would by pertersons, but they took off there just picks option.. so I won't spend 400$ on the gov. elite4 set.
But seriosuly it's opinion. Steels steel, odds are once you get good you will end up modding the picks to okr better than thre generic shape.
But I do agree, you get what you pay for, peterson may be expensive, but you get the name, with the picks, that name itself has been around a while, and is trustworthy, thats good enough for me.

If i remeber correctly there was talk that they were both SO at one time, but owners or partners split... But thats just what I heard.
Larry from SO is an Okay guy, never had any problems with the tools.
LPS.com- I see alot of spam on here, yet Rich is a good guy as far as contact so there fine.
Ken from petereson makes great tools as well, I am going by what i here, but looking at the site they appear good to me from just using lockpicks alot.
Each company's good, Again your tastes Ladies.

Ummmmm... no
Lock Pick Tools (which is Rich and not LPS which is Red) well they never had any affiliation with SO, in fact here's their company history from their web site:
Since 1976, our parent co. - R.C.S. Tool & Machine has been producing quality tools and dies for clients all over the world. They produced tooling for the manufacture of baking pans for the government of Hungary. Along with tooling to manufacture aluminum doors, windows and many other products for faraway places like Madagascar, Brazil, Saint Lucia and Jamaica to name a few. But all along the way they were busy developing a product line of their own, "Lockpick Tools". Some of the first tools developed in 1979 were the Slim Jim and a complete set of lock picks, as well as a complete package of automotive wire tools. In 1985 they started to manufacture their tools from Tempered Stainless Steel instead of the conventional Blue Temper Carbon Steel. Their market was still a small niche market, so in 1998 it was decided to expand their market share with dedicated energy and resources toward the developement of New Products rather than build tooling and dies for outside sourcing. The New Slide-6 is a good example of this effort. This is only one of the many new products that will continue to join their product line.

I read this forum and could not help but add in my two cents.
When I began picking, I purchased this set from http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/DBA776-2165-675.html. It was a of a very nice quality. Very soon, I realized that I would need a new, more advanced set to keep up with me, so I googled "lockpicks". One of the first hits to show up was SouthOrd, so I started ogling their products. Eventually, I decided to purchase the jackknife tool ( http://www.southord.com/images/fullsize/JPXS-6.jpg), a thirty-two piece set ( http://www.southord.com/images/fullsize/MPSX-32.jpg), and the Shovit tool ( http://www.southord.com/images/fullsize/SJ-50.jpg). Since my office was in Vancouver, but my credit card was registered to my home address in Portland, I called them to place my order. Much to my surprise, the man that I talked to offered to sell me the factory commercial rejects, such as the picks with slight scratches already on them or a poorly stamped label. He promised that this would not affect quality. Amazingly, the entire order, including $20 for shipping, cost me only $100. I got them promptly and have been using them ever since. The damage on them when I received them was minimal and in no way affected their performance.
Sorry if this sounds too glowing for you, but I was very pleased.
