I started yesterday working this lock with a wiper blade half diamond I made. I have opended it about a dozen times using the half diamond. I still am not sure if I am setting pins or getting lucky though. Its almost as if there are only three pins that I set and the fourth may be getting lifted on one of the edges of the diamond.

With my rake its almost no fun, but it does amaze me, but not the same kind of excitement as I get when picking it single pin. I get it open almost as quick as with a key with the rake.

My brother and my father are now playing around with picks and tension bars while they sit and watch tv. Its pretty funny, mainly due to the master no. 3

Master Padlocks - just an eyelash

Postby fjardeson » 18 Jun 2006 22:27

I use Master 27's professionally, and often have to pick the durn things. (Computer locks). When I first learned the 27 (5-pin, newer ones have spools, older ones don't but have higher precision on the cylinders) I noticed one thing... caps for emphasis, not rudeness... PADLOCKS HAVE VERY SMALL CODING DIFFERENCES. The difference between a key's 0 cut and a 6 cut is little more than one eighth of an inch! Once I realized this, I got to work with very small moves on a half-diamond and (most) of my problems were solved. I only have to use a (arrgh) rotary pick half the time now. :)

Is a rotary pick similar to a rake?

Just kidding.

Master no. 5 - a bit bigger and pretty much opens the same way as the no3. I just purchased it at around 3:30pm, opened it about 5 minutes ago, opening it 30 seconds later.

Can you guys pick this lock with a paperclip? I have been trying to pick the lock for 2 days now (I just started lockpicking, and I have not picked anything yet). The problem that I have is that when I stick the pick into the lock, I can't distinguish between the indevidual pins, and when I try to push the pins in the back up, all of them go up. Is this what unexperienced beginners feel, or does my pick suck?

I had a similar problem starting out with just a paperclip because the real picks were in the mail. A No. 3 should be big enough of a smaller paper clip. You may want to bend it kinda like this:

_/\____

Maybe a little flatter at the peak. The problem I find with paper clips is that I was pushing too much and the wire was way to weak.

I just picked up this lock yesterday (it is my second lock) and it is really different than the other MasterLock that I picked, the "Floating" tumbler sent me for a loop, it makes picking with a feeler pick (I only have two picks that I made) really tough.

I was able to get this one within an hour my first time, then it took me a little longer (I still can not get it by SPP in under 5min) but with the rake that I made it took maybe 5sec. not as much gratification but it does get the job done.

My 2cents.

i found one of these master no. 3 yesterday and i was able to open it in about one minute with pics i made from a metal slinky.

its quite easy to open if u just put a little bit of tension on it and wiggle a rake in and out of it

I just got back into picking yesterday and I've been practicing on some random locks around work. (I have a lot of free time here) The MasterLock 3 seems to be very popular around here and I've popped 3 of them here and have been carrying on around to practice on for a couple days now.
The point of all this is, I always fee like I've only set 2 of the four pins when these locks pop. No other lock feels this way as consistently as the Masterlock 3. Can anyone confirm this suspicion or am I just missing something?

On my No. 3 I have to put more than light pressure on the wrench to get any of the pins to bind. Even when I set the pin that is binding first I have to keep the same amount of pressure on the wrench or the other pins won't bind. Also, sometimes I'll over set a pin and have to let off the tension wrench just enough so the overset pin pops back down without unsetting the first pin. I can almost always pick it in under 1 minute (sometimes 30 seconds) unless I'm trying too hard to go fast.

Some Master no. 3's pop right open and some take a few. This is such a sloppy, junky lock. I would never use one to protect anything of any remote value. We use these at work as lock-out locks and lost the key to one so I put it in a vice and took a 14mm allen wrench (about 6" long) and put it through the shackle and twisted the allen wrench with my bare hands and the shackle broke in half. Now thats junk. If you're having a hrad time picking one of these it's probably because the cylinder is so sloppy.
