Interesting posts, I appreciate the effort, and any criticism is good gfor the field.
Regarding the 'filing' of the shoulder, I take my keys right down at the shoulder anyway. I then use either a spring or a washer as a 'dampner'. I use either a red 3mm fibre washer, or a 2mm rubber washer. I can mix and match these to give me 3,4,5,6,7,8mm dampners over the shoulder. Some locks respond well to springs, some to rubber washers, some to fibre washers. I ocassionally use a flat steel washer behind the spring too. In the picture, you can (just about) see I've used a beaded cable tie to keep a washer with a key. Quite handy. You'll also notice the key looks like a puffin. That's just that.
The other picture shows a few of my bump keys. I'm very proud of the range of patterns I've managed to create. And they all have their uses. Different patterns can sometimes mean the difference between a lock bumping or not. Enjoy (try and zoom in, as the resolution is better)
