Airport security is so overlooked. its amazingly easy for ground crews to smuggle anything aboard a ship.... just go through the metal detectors and have someone throw stuff over the fence to you or slide it under.
There is so much emphasis stressed on security that it causes harm. People (terrorists, smugglers, etc.) will always find ways around things, why punish everyone?

Wow, I totally missed this thread, and I've flown with lockpicks 4 times now (2 x two-way flights), most recently in Feb '06 and March '07. Each time, I walked through TSA with no issues-- 3 of the times they identified me as a locksmith in rhetoric (not even asking me), and one time they spent maybe 20 seconds in quiet debate about the length of the picks (under 7" so they're legal).

On the flights, I take them out, pick my locks, and teach my seat neighbor how to pick. One stewardess even seemed fondly interested but couldn't just hang out next to me the whole flight.

What's stranger still, each of these flighs were to or from Chicago O'hare (ORD), and were on United. So I guess I just lucked out and didn't get the bitchfromhell. In my shoes, without any heavy-weights on the ground to back me up, I'd probably freak and do something stupid, especially if some wannabe-hero wanted to save the day from me.

Good story, but not 100% seating with me. Even if it didn't make the news, I would have known about it because my dad works closely with United's ground crew and security, and hears -everything- even if it doesn't make the news. And being a person who picks on planes, he would have told me about it for sure.

been dealing wiht exec svcs staffer about it. I will try n wav the call so you can hear some of their responses. It's pretty funny stuff.

To bring more credit.. feel free to do some social eng..and lokoup my incident #.. pm me for it.

also.. if your dad is with that crew.. he should know pam coslet. she is the one handl'n the case.

I do agree though... some flight attendants get pretty enchanted by it. I had one sit in an open seat for about 20 min with me as i had her practice on a clear trainer. ** and who said this shit wouldn't get ya chix?!?

My dad is actually a supervisor for Lufthansa Operations who contracts United's baggage and ramp services, and part of his job is to supervise loading and unloading, so he spends most of his time on the ramp, and all of his time on United's radios. When anything happens to any flight in the whole of O'hare-- such as a turn-around, grounding, or abnormality of any kind, he usually knows about it before that airline's own supervisors do.

I have some great stories from him that never made the news; such as a suitcase blowing up into a ball of flames as it was being loaded, because it contained a laptop that was turned on, over-heating, and contained a eBay laptop battery from china. Or of a dog that was dropped from the plane's cargo hold during loading, smashing open his crate, and he escaped running off into the field around Ohare never to be seen again. Very few of these incidents ever make the headlines.

I will ask though. What was the exact date of the flight, and do you remember the flight number/time of departure and grounding?

I'm talking to him now, and he doesn't work on Thursdays so he missed it, sorry. He'll ask around though because I'm specifically interested in this.

It actually does concern me and many others very personally. Many of us enjoy passing the time on long flights with a set of picks and curious seat neighbors. There is no better place to spread the influence of locksport than on a plane (or train).

I agree.. this is perfect for the forum. I am an LP enthusiast and have been for quite some time. Most of the time i participate in these forums privately, because there are so many " i know everything" type people..and not enough ppl just out there sharing experiences.

Not only do I do this for a hobby, but it is also a integral part of my job. I am concerned for the community members that may do this for a living or simply use it as a way to meditate on a flight * or pick up stewardesses*

Yes.. i care about other LP's supporters ( yer right legion... i am a hippie... n i should prolly move to boulder)

No need to convince anyone... take this experience for what you will.... i just don't wanna see one of you Fu*$ers get my flight turned around and have some TSA gunfight break out, because you didn't have the same luck.

heh, I think there's just a general desire for knowledgeable people to involve themselves more in the community. Yanno?

We've got to keep it going though. BS like this is rarely articulated so well.

Unfortunately for several years I was a much sought after Expert on Close Quarters Combat and Improvised Weapons. My Jaguar was so sweet that when I parked at airports the friggin Air Traffic Comptroller would come and park it for me. Then, when I went through security and my belt went off. They let me get on the plane with it anyway. Then this Jessica Rabbit stewy noticed the government microchip implanted in my ear (so they know where I am if anything messy happens) and she freaked out. Cuz, honestly, I'm a lethal weapon, inside and out, baby. Huzzah.

:P if you're implying that he's lying, I believe it's been vaguely well established that this may actually have happened by some of the other forumites.
