How do you deal with sideways/upside down locks?

Postby Badmonkey005 » 1 Jan 2006 17:53

I was just wondering, it's a whole different feel when the pins of the lock are on the bottom, or the lock is sideways.

How do you deal with that? Or do you just keep practicing with a lock in a different position?

"upside-down locks" .. I'm taking a guess and saying a Euro profile cylinder.. picks the same way really... nothing special, except you won't be able to tell if the pins are set by mere lifting them and feeling for lack of spring preasure.

the "sideways ones" I think you mean dimple locks perhaps? they have horizontal keyways.. if so it depends on the warding of the lock really... I've seen some Kaba dimple locks that had literaly no warding and would be dead-easy to pick with normal picks.... only 5 pins looking at the key as well... if you mean a dimple lock you could try Matador rakes.

Could he be talking about locks that are just mounted up-side down?

Yes, I think that's what he means -- or mounted sideways, as is often the case in lever handles.

n2oah and vector40 are right.

I have seen lever handles that have sideways locks... I sit there and scratch my head and am glad that I cant afford to frustrate myself by buying one and trying to pick it.

Then at my friends house, his crazy parents put the locks on upside down! It just kinda makes me scratch my head and wonder how you deal with it... lol
