i was wondering if this lock would be fine for beginning http://www.canadiantire.ca/assortments/ ... 8415932265 i dont know if it can be re-pinned or what not. i really want one that can be re-pinned for the beginners exercises. if anyone could tell me if this is a good choise or not, it would be greatly appreciated

First time you follow the link... you get taken thru a zip code and home page navigation (cookies). Follow the link TWICE to see the actual lock.

This seems a bit expensive for a practice lock. Yes... it'll meet your needs, but you may consider visiting a home improvement center / hardware store.

Most home centers carry a decent selection (including Schlage) and can tell you which (if not all) are repinnable. These stores also offer the service of key-alike and rekeying.

I think you'll get better deal from your local shops as well

deadbolt

Postby conker » 2 Feb 2006 1:26

i would work my way up, i just bought a cheap door knob from a hardware store, and managed to take the cylinder out of it. i then just would practice wherever i was, i would just turn it with my fingers (as a tension wrench since it wasn't attached to anything) and would use a simple pick or paperclip/hairpin to pick it. this way, i could get more practice in and learn with different tools.

but i wouldn't invest in anything that expensive or secure. you could probably find one for less money, since a deadbolt is basically a deadbolt. and deadbolts aren't that nice to pick, since you need to keep the key in them to turn them... and picking will only get you about 1/4 of the way if you're lucky.

but there is a method of turning it 1/4, and using a small pair of pliars to move the bar over from the latch, therefore allowing the lock to be unlocked "unmanually"
picking it allows it to be moved, but you can't turn it to unlock it, so you just have to improvise. i wish i could explain better, just look at a picture of one and you'll get the idea... hopefully

happy picking, and if you do get that one, i would put it in a piece of wood for picking simplicity.

I agree with the previous posters; this is pretty expensive for a practice lock. Try looking at hardware shops for lower prices, or look on ebay for lock cylindars. you dont even need the hardware unless you are going to mount it on a board.
