Eletrcal box locks???? sooo confused!!!

Postby clayton1123 » 21 Feb 2006 1:48

http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl= ... 26sa%3DNOk, the lock i'm about to describe I dont have a pic of but it is found on the side door of electrical boxs, it has a round shackle with a small hole for a key of some sort. I was curious if these locks even have pins. They are confusing and seem very effective. Later I may have some better picks. I dont even think its a tubular lock.

Now, why would you want to pick one of those?:?
There's no replacement for displacement.

Stay far, FAR away from those boxes. If you need service, contact your utility company, or else the morgue might be contacting your family.

I do agree, STAY away from the electrical stuff unless you ARE an experienced electrician. I worked in the electrical field for a couple of years and have seen/heard some bad stuff.

^^^^^I had to say that just to cover my butt. Now, to answer your question..... I believe that what you are describing can be found here: http://www.inner-tite.com/home.html If in fact it is, the tool needed will most likely look like this: http://www.monogramaerospace.com/produc ... hbody.html This is not the actual tool but very similar and has worked for me. :D The real tools that are on the first mentioned site are restricted from the public.

The way the lock operates is inside that round hole is a sleeve that is held in place by a spring. After the tool is inserted, a nut or lever causes the tool to spread open to grasp the sleeve. When pulled far enough it will allow a tiny ball to fall out of place and the lock will open.

Hope this helps and please be careful. :?
It is far better to remain silent and be thought of as stupid, rather than opening your mouth and removing all possible doubt.

I think its against the law to pick or open in any other way those boxes unless you work for or have been sent by the people who own the box ie the service provider.

Leave it alone.

I understand that I wont mess with these boxes but I was just curious about these locks because they are different from any other I have seen before. Besides if somebody got one open, there would'nt be any point. I hope to be a certified locksmith and was wondering what I would do if they called me to fix their lock and I go out there and stand there like duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh. Thank you for the warnings and info so far.

As a lockie you wont be called out to these locks and if you are you should call the services company to sort it and report the tampering of it, you should not touch it unless given permission from the services company whether trading or not.

Im only helping you before you get into trouble if you was ever to get called to oe.

yea don't go into one of those boxes...there's bound to be some high amperage in there.

You have no idea what can happen if you cross 2 "hot" pieces of metal in there.

Last year when working with an electrician on a 3 phase panel we had something go very wrong.

We were done with the 3ph. panel and closed it up...we then turned on the main breaker to it and something failed in the panel and the arc blew the door off and a good 30 feet away.

Really, stay away from any electrical panel unless you are a licensed electrician and know what you are doing in there.

don't go in there......no answer of real quality....don't go in there. answer to ?...don't go in there...don't go in there...don't go in there...don't go in there... Guys, don't you think that after the 1st, or 2nd or 3rd warning was posted, and then he said that he WASN'T going in there, that all of the others were really nessecary? I thought that we were all adults here, and that he was seeking imformation, not supervision. Just my opinion. Bear with me if I come off as an ass. today is only day 3 in the stop smoking after 17 years plan.
I hear what you are saying.....that doesn't mean I agree with you....Just that I am nodding my head to placate you and silence your futile attempts to win the argument.

I would like to know how a safe works, no intent of learing how to open one or ever apply it. I am fascinated by the door to my safe deposit box, or anything I believe I "shouldn't know."

There are certain things that are kept secret or guarded for a reason. I guarantee that 99% of the people who will use that information know just enough to get themselves into trouble.

I belive all knowlege is worth having, but when it comes to certain things you just have to respect not knowing it. There is such a thing as a trade secret. Yes it would be nice to understand how that stuff works, and provide a feeling of satisfaction, but ultimatly it really doesn't benifit you in any way. People tend to avoid discussing anything like this on the forums, which I support. If you google anything lock related, maybe 70% of the results are from this site, and it is easily found. This site is for a minute percentage of people that genuinly have a interest in the mechanics of locks such as yourself, but suspicous posts come up all the time for the same stuff. It's simple to see a diagram on how it works and say oh, well that makes sense, but you shouldn't need any more info or means to apply it, or reason to open a box of death.

I genuinly belive you just found it interesting, as any of us would, but this has been covered time and time again, sorry for the semi-flame, but this stuff has been posted all the time. Good question, touchy subject, and it's not information you would want to give out as maybe 90% of the people who specifically google for that lock will find a post like this, figure out how to get in, maybe even by circumventing it out of frustration, and know just enough to end up dead.

Firstly, since it seems to be in vogue now, I'll say "don't go in there. You'll put an eye out." Just in case he missed the other eight posts saying so, you know.

I believe safe cracking in the advanced forums. You have to make a large, untraceable 'purchase' from Varjeal's store to get in there. You can also do some research on your own. Howthingswork may have some basic information if you just want to know... how it works. The huge bible everyone talks about (look up 'lockpicking bible' and I'm sure you'll find it) sounds like it has information too, but that's $200.

Thank you for straightening out this thread. Some people can be immature. I have found a little info but am still confuse. The lock is called a mitey lock and can be found here. Im still not sure what kind of "key" opens it. http://www.inner-tite.com/home.html[/url]
