No Pins Binding

Postby zjester88 » 27 Feb 2006 21:08

I bought a cheap generic padlock that has 4 pins in it, and I have been working on it for some time. I've picked a few locks I already had around my home, and I've read all the MIT Lock Picking guide, but I don't seem to be able to get any of the pins to bind at all. I have put all ammounts of torque on the plug but it never seems to make a difference, I don't even feel friction, and the plug doesn't seem to rotate at all. Does anyone know anything I am doing wrong? I am fairly new to lockpicking. If anyone has suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. If this has already been posted I apolagize, I've been reading posts for hours O_o

What types of picks are you using? What are you using for a tension wrench? Did you try picking it the other way. Some locks will only pick one way, Padlocks mostly. Try reversing tension direction.

You say you don't feel friction, are you referring to the pins?

It is really very weird, no pins binding... are you certain that you're applying tension in the right place? I've found some locks that don't turn when I put the tension wrench too high. Try to apply tension a bit lower near the pins (middle of the lock).

make sure you are turning the cylinder the correct way too, i mess with a lock for hours and ended up being that i was turning the wrong way.. ahhh what a waste of time to learn that, and try all types of tension wrenches, i think personally the tension wrench is the most important tool

They probably aren't pins, they're probably wafers, wafer's don't bind in terms of being able to hear a click when you drop them, you won't even feel them really bind, you just put pressure on the heaviest wafer, yadda yadda, what ever technique you may wield.
Anyways, are you for sure certain that there is a pin spring housing? because if not it probably is a wafer lock, rake it a little with a ball or half ball type pick, still using the tension wrench.
someone love me!

Thanks for all the comments, I figured out what I was doing wrong  I needed even MORE torque than what I was using, I found a windshield wiper blade and I made a nice new Torque Wrench, and I was able to apply enough to get the pins to bind. Anyways I opened the lock :D
Thanks everybody for helping in my moment of stupidity haha.

Dont feel bad the second padlock I bought to pick required a Lot more tension, took me quite some time to figure that out. Up to that point I was thinking the same thing.... why wont these pins bind ;)
Cause if they catch you in the back seat
