I just found out by my own hard luck that some locks will only open by turning the cylendar in one direction. That means that if you are torquing it counterclockwise, and finally beat it, you are still out of luck when you discover that it only opens clockwise. Now you've gotta let all the pins go so you can torque it the other way.
Make sure you know which way it opens before you start. Most locks that I've seen work either way. But apparently some do not. THis Brinks R70 for example.

Usually when you apply tension one way rotates more than the other, usually that's the easiest side to open it.

If you have the key, Why on earth do you need to pick the lock?
In response to the OP.
Get a Plug Spinner.

but there are alot of locks that I don't have keys to, so that is not always possible. Unfortunatly, when you buy the bulk lots on ebay they don't always, or even usually have all the keys to them, which isn't a big deal, since they are sold by the pound. Anyways, I haven't had that problem, but if I did, I would use a plug spinner. I do know that a masterlock padlock 220 and a 230 will only open if you turn them clockwise, wich only makes sense, since there is a wierd keyway opening to prevent you from turning it that way, you have to really want to turn it the wrong way. I usally set it that way by picking it, then using a plug spinner to take it past the protective ward, and then lock the lock. Anyways, either make a DIY plug spinner( use the search funtion on the top of the page) or buy one. I use the south ord pen style, and I have never had a problem with it even after more than a year of solid use. best 40 bucks I spent.
I hear what you are saying.....that doesn't mean I agree with you....Just that I am nodding my head to placate you and silence your futile attempts to win the argument.

Well, I have the key to almost every lock I practice with. But what's the point of using the key if what I want is to practice Lock Picking?

A pug spinner is the thing to have as i think someone may have said
You can do this the cheapest and quickest way by turning the plug back to almost until the pins reset then put an elastic band on the end of your tension wrench and stretch it as far as it will go, fit the wrench in the plug and let go of the wrench, with practise you should get the plug to spin past the opposite way

Just make sure the plug turns at ALL in the "wrong way." If it just hits a hard stop, a plug spinner will be useless, as the key won't even turn in that direction.
