Interesting Experience with a Cheap Padlock

Postby thequantaleaper » 22 Mar 2006 0:45

I'm an official newbie in this fascinating craft... and I noticed while feeling around inside a padlock I bought from a national grocery store for about $4, something kinda interesting.

While feeling around, I managed to open it by moving the latches holding the shackle on both sides away one at a time while pulling on it.

I was curious as to if this flaw is common in any number of commercially used padlocks?

I've having a hard time picturing what you mean. Did you use some kind shim? By the way, was it one of those cheap "Helping Hand" brand padlocks?

I think he did the thing where you physically move the locking bar to unlock the padlock. Its in some older commercial brands. I have an Ace lock that does it. Not many newer locks have this feature. Its a cool trick though. Moving the lock bar, Shimming the lock, and cutting the shackle are your three options besides picking it.
