Abus Discus 24/60 review by Locknewbie21

http://www.lockitt.com/padlockdiscus.htm(second lock down on the page)

Ok I had a thread asking questions on it and now my lock has come in the the mail and i spent some time picking and analizing it. So heres the rundown.
10=Highest quality 1= lowest quality

Dificulty rating: 7 1/2

Level Recomened: Intermediate

Personal Thoughts:
Okay heres my personal thoughts of the abus discus. The Lock i chose was the second in dificulty as the buffo is the standard. This lock is challenging but a highly possible pick. The hardest part of the lock if you look at the picture is the warding of the key way and the actauly key way size. You have no extra room for you pick and the pins have a not so good feedback making them a challenge to read. Unlike the popular knockoff to this forum the brinks r70 this lock does not have a springloaded cylinder, and there for using my method of heavy tension to read the pins binding does not work. Also raking the pins to false set is possible yet very very difficult due to the actual size of the key way.

Best Pick to Use:Short or Medium Hook Pick hands down, Slim line if avaiable(highly recomended)
Tension wrench to use: Very slim one, if you have a southord set use the slimest one it fits perfectly.

How I defeat it everytime

Ok first things first, and that is tension wrench placement for this is the crucial part of your actual success with this lock. I took my slim tension wrench and put about a 2 cm bend at the opposite end of the bent end, so it would fit snug in the top of the key way where the pins are, this will allow you to have the maximum amount of room for pick manuverability...which isn't much even with this measure taken.

Now use your hook and follow standard single pin picking protocal until false set is reached. Now is the tricky part. i have noticed that these abus's are put togehter so well that when you achieve a false set and begin to release tension to push up the security pin, the precision of it has the tendency to screw up the false set and your back to square one so be very gentle when seting the security pins.

I am now able to pick this lock consistantly and the major hardship of this lock is the high tollerances and the extremley small and rather annoying warding on the key way. So that is the abus discus 20/60 in a nut schell. I would not suggest a newbie to this lock, this is for someone experienced with small cylinders security pins and very good tension control.

Tell me what you guys think yours truly Andy 8) [/url]

abusdisci

Postby raimundo » 18 Apr 2006 9:35

the disci (plural) are usually mounted so that the pins are down. I use a bogota set that is small, thin to fit the keyway, and have no problem with them, there is also the tensor that may be needed, so that it fits the (top) of the upside down keyway, but is levered from beneath, where an ordinary tensor has a 90% bend, then a 90% twist somewhere back of that on the shaft, you can make the bend and twist in one simple curve, this leaves the shaft somewhat offset from the blade of the tensor, and so it can go into the (top) of the keyway and come out to the side and point down past the pick work, this is useful when the discus is mounted so that the hasp area is obstructed from view and the ordinary tensor would have manuvering problems. if you make such a tensor, heat the bend after bending with a bic lighter, approximatly 30 seconds, till the steel blues, then quench in cold water immediatly,(get the water ready nearby before heating)

ABUS Diskus locks

Postby Patd265 » 2 May 2006 15:02

Hi, this is Pat from lockitt.com
I found this a very interesting thread and I am impressed. Would like to see how you guys would do on the ABUS 20/70. I have not ran into anyone capable of picking the Abus plus cylinder.
Regards
Pat

Well it is a very good lock mechanism, menaing its a disclocking mech. The info on picking these is for te advanced forums i think? correct me if i am wrong. But from what i have heard there very challenging to pick, to be honest i have really only seen one marketed disc pick for like 300euro i think? It may not be the only one but thats what i have seen. I have never really attempted to pick one, i would give it a try, but i am deffinatly sure someone on here will have a great review on one.

Hello LockNewbie21, is there a way for you to show a picture of the wrench you told about, and also I wanted to have your opinion
on the use of a spring tension wrench to work: -
- on the Abus 20/60 and more particularly
- on Abus Padlocks with Security Pins like 45/30 or 35/40 ?

What do you recon ?

The tension wrench is simple, take a wiper blade insert and just put it into the top of the key way(should be the slanted part of the keyway) then you just bend it right in the lock. It should fit perfect in the lock and give you great feedback. As for locks with spools use that same wrench or make diffrent one for diffrent locks, the feedback and neg. plug feel is great.

Yes, the Abus plus can be picked, but it is difficult.
