A picture will help alot.
I have no experience with Bird locks, but maybe one of the UK fellas' can help you, I don't know if there's any special tricks.
Like I said though, a picture will help loads.

Is the clip formed like a C or an O?
In other words, is it a complete circle or an incomplete one?

If it is like a C, try a flat bottle opener like that found in some swiss army knives or at the end of a tin opener (the manual wind one, not electric...lol)

urhm, get a kitchen knife and try to wedge it between the circlip and the plug then turn and it should come loose. You are beding it essentialy, but make sure you get it off in one piece mate.

It sounds like they use a plug retention clip that's similar to what some of the Kwiksets here use. Kwikset's site has a manual discussing how to remove the little clip.
http://www.kwikset.com/Trade/Literature ... Manual.pdf
Have a look at page 32 of that document. Though they have you use their special little tool, you can use needle nose pliers spread a little for the same effect.

the bar you talk about,is used to withdraw the latch mechanism. this has to be cut to length to suit the main body of the lock, taking into account the door thickness etc.
there's no such thing as gravity. The earth SUCKS!!

This bar is known by a few names, but most commonly as the 'tail piece'. Scampdog got it's function right, so no need to elaborate on it.

Tell you the truth this sounds like something you should just keep fiddling around with, not much need to post about it, fiddling does much.

Try turning the plug with the key. I have seen some locks where the restraining clip will only come off with the plug in a set position.

The bird cylinders are the cheapist of the cheap and there is noting special or or quality about them, the clip is just the normal E type clip and needs priseing off as normal,

Prefer chickens do we? I guess you could get more than fingers and thumbs in.
Sorry, I know that was silly, but couldn't help it!
