Any way to make the fingers more sensitive to pin movement?

Postby Night-picker » 25 Aug 2006 22:18

Hi everyone. First time posting on this site.
I've had some experience at picking pin tumbler locks but have trouble feeling the pin movement thru the pick as much as I would like to. Does anyone know any exercises or what ever you call it to make the fingers more sensitive to the pin and/or tension wrench movement?
I've heard fine sandpaper to sand the skin near the finger tips works well but only in the short run. Too much and the fingers just get sore.
And please none of that - PRACTICE, PRACTICE, AND MORE PRACTICE stuff. I'm already doing that. What I need is real advice.

And thanks in advance.

You're gonna HATE me for what I'm about to say but...

yeah

You need a lot of practice - it will only come with time. Your fingers will begin to notice the waveform of a pin setting (it feels like the resistence suddenly goes away,) and your brain will pick up on it. There's no magic bullet or voodoo that will make this happen any faster.

ummm... dude. us telling you to practice is real advice.

what SFGOON said is really the only thing thats gonna change that in the long run. and hey- who knows, maybe you'll learn some stuff about picking while you're at it?

otherwise we can try a different technique. and it goes like this:

you stand in your shower, wearing a bathing suit. with exactly two inches of tomatoe juice in the tub. you then must pray to the all knowing SHIBA. she will absolve you of all of your tension. (try not to pee in the tub in this part)

then you must wait exactly 2 hours with your finger tips in the tomatoe juice. this will soften them. while doing this, you must play snoop dogg music at about 20 decibals. this will allow your ears to become attuned to many different levels of fine sound.

after that, you send me $20 USD with a nice thank you card and try picking. you should* find that your finger and ears will be ready for such a challnge.

*note: some patients have found that this only makes them feel dumb and $20 shorter, while studies have shown this to be one effect, other studies conducted in private research facilities have proven this to be an effective method of wasting your day.

Yes, if you are used to manual labor you can actually use lotion every day 4-6 times per day and it WILL make a difference. When I first stared I was working in the oil fields pulling and drilling wells. Lotion was the only way that I could maintain feel on my picks for the first year or so. That was a slow year I guarantee you..... Just because of the type of work I was doing..
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Hey Crip-ooze, You got a lot of growing up to do - man!

Your so-called advice was NOT funny and completely uncalled for.
Please show me respect and I'll be glad to return the favor. Otherwise
kindly keep your juvenile opinions to yourself.

Nuff-said!

Aye!
Try to hold the hormones at bay our young friend.
What everyone here said is the truth. Only practice will really solve the problem of not feeling the pins...

Of corse, there is a little tip that someone thought of some time ago...
You will find the detailes HERE.
Good luck on your way up!

Cheers,
N.

Boy oh boy, if I have a pet peeve, it's when someone says "Please give me advice" and then proceeds to tell you HOW to give that advice.

Night-picker: You're new here, so you can be excused for your comments. But if you want to enjoy your time here, please consider this: The advice given to you was good. Practice. If you're not up for that, move along. Krypos was saying the same thing. His tomato juice comments, although sarcastic, makes the same point that GOON was making. There's no magic bullet. There are PLENTY of resources on this site, including that Beginner Lockpicking Exercise. I can think of no better place for a beginner to start than the Beginner Lockpicking Exercise.

If what you're looking for is some magical words that will give you the benefit of experience without the work, you'd best be looking down the rabbit hole, 'cause it doesn't work that way in this world.
