Credit card key blank

If you want to copy a key for a basic deadbolt or doorknob but are having trouble getting a blank to work with, in a pinch a credit card will work! Take the key to be copied and clamp it to the credit card with a small C clamp or vice grip then take a xacto knife, or box cutter then just cut to the shape of the key I ran into two problems #1 the plastic key will not fit into the keyway because just below the pins the keyway curves #2 even if the plastic key did fit it would not be strong enough to lock or unlock a deadbolt 1 solution fixes both problems, trim the bottom of the key off until it fits. mine is a kwickset so I cut it where the grove on the side of the key is about half way slide the plastic key in the lock and put your tension wrench at the bottom to turn the plug . it works great! Update this method also works to make a plastic bump key but will only work by tapping the top of the lock where the pins are I tried it on a dead bolt cylinder

This also works with the clear plastic on the cover of a CD holder. But you dont use it as a regular key, use it with your tension wrench. Apply tension and then insert the plastic "key" into the lock and push all the pins up untill they all align with the shear line.

I used a variation on your method... I used a metal paper clamp (on the left) to hold the proper sized piece of plastic to the key, then I heated the blade of an exacto-knife with a small pen torch and it cut through it like an exacto-knife through butter... hehe.

it works great, and as you both mentioned it requires the use of my tension tool to function correctly. The time to produce this (after I got the brilliant idea to heat the knife) was about a minute, isn't that awesome?
