curtain picks

Postby lockmeister » 27 Oct 2006 16:24

recently purchased cb curtain picks, but have struggled to open any locks, 3g114s etc, the pick wire seems to jam against the curtain/tension bar when trying to tension the bolt. any clues as to where i,am going wrong please.

I can tell you that even with the cb pick you are not just going to open the 3g114's. That is a lock best left after you have practiced alot. Look for a lock that does not have a lot of low levers in something like an era invincible as the curtain is the same size as the 3g114 so your pick will be suited to pick that. Make a plexi cover to start with so you can see what you are doing while getting a feel for the locks also as each lever lock will have it's own distinct feel for sure.

I am by no means an expert on these locks and I am sure someone else more experience will chime in soon with more advice.

curtain picks

Postby lockmeister » 27 Oct 2006 16:51

\i can pick 5 lever locks with 2 in 1 picks no problem but there seems no space to move the pick between the curtain and the levers. I will try other curtained locks but the 3g114 is the most common lock i come across.

A standard 5 lever lock with wires or 2 in 1's and a 5 lever lock with a curtain are 2 different creatures indeed. The curtain is there to do just what it is doing, making picking difficult. When moving the wire from lever to lever it sometimes helps to pull the end of the wire out from the body of the tool to aid in slipping past low levers though from what I hear low levers are not a problem with the cb picks.

Like I stated, grab an easier lock to start with and work up to the 114's as it is going to take quite a bit of practice if you are just starting to pick curtain locks.

Get yourself a union 2134 or as Zeke said an Invincible,

Chris will help you via email as well if you are really stuck but its best to start on the easy locks even if you dont come across them and want to only pick the 114's,

They are possable but again as Zeke says its an almost impossable feat if your only just learning,

Get picking the easier locks and ask questions on those if you get stuck then when picking those well you can move on to the 114's and you will have a better footing and understand what the issues are,

If you struggle getting the wire under the levers do as the guide and Zeke suggest's and lift the lollipop out of the stem and angle the wire tip to fit under the levers, sometimes you have to gently pusuade the wire to move under the levers,

To be honest for the price and time saved the 114 P+C is worth investing in if you get a lot of them,

On a side note,

The 114's are really only to be discussed in the advanced forums at the moment,

Sounds like you could possibly by using the wrong end of the L wire at end of the thumb turn for the side of the lock your trying to pick. I have known of someone else who had a similar problem. Otherwise its the low levers causing you troubles. I started by taking a lock apart removing the hardplate and drilling a spy hole where the bolt stub is. Put it all back together minus the hardplate.
You can then play and watch the levers as you work your way through and get the feel.

Pesonally I'd invest in the 114 Pin & Cam like shrub says if you come across them alot. Thats what i use too and once you've mastered the skill, ehich doesn't take long, you'll be opening them in minuets everytime.
