which depth bump key should i get first

Postby Cold_Turkey » 27 Nov 2006 19:02

hi again, im buying 5 bump keys tomorrow. Yale, Union, Legge, Ge Ge, & Viro. before i part with my cash, i can choose the depth i want. do i need the deepest depth for all 5 or is it different for some locks. im guessing i will need the deepest but i should ask to make sure.

Yes deepest depth for all locks

Your second post confuses me

"They have the stop shank reduced" you mean the shoulder is filed off a bit?
If so there still bump keys

Who is he?

Im not a bump master I haven’t even used 1 so I apologize if I got something wrong

he's someone i contacted on ebay. he must have more then one account, cause he contacted me from a different one. both accounts sell locks and stuff. he said they have the stop shank reduced, so that you are able to most times jiggle them. confused me too. maybe thats a good thing!!

They may be depth and space keys not bump keys. Bump keys are not allowed on ebay. But sounds like hes already took some of the shoulder or off setted the cuts.

bump keys

Postby Lauren » 27 Nov 2006 20:10

Make your own bump keys, it's easy, it's fun, and it will sharpen your skills with a file. Start collecting cut un-used keys. The beauty here is that the manufacture pin spacing is already figured out for you-just file deeper.

or maybe you might hold off on bumping and learn to pick better. cuz id bet a million bucks (not actually money here folks, cuz someone is gonna be a smart mouth....) but a million bucks you cant pick a lot of things, so id say try out picking for a change. see how that goes.

If ur paying more than it costs to get a key cut to get a bump key ur getting ripped off. i went in to my local lockies and told him what i wanted and what its for. and simply cuz i was honest and had a chat about picking he knew i wasn't a thief and cut it for me on the spot.

I would agree, a bumpkey should cost no more than a regular cut key, unless they are having to space the cuts out manually and not using a programable cutter, then charging you extra for doing the little extra work.

If you choose to buy them, get the deepest cut key for which ever lock, they will be different for each lock. But also give a try at filing your own.
