paperclips and hairpins

Postby raimundo » 22 May 2007 12:10

I have often opened threads on 'homemade' picks lately, and found that it was just about some nube with his hairpin or paper clip. these do not even qualify as homemade picks, they are at best, mcgayvers. I don't even want to read another thread about them unless someone finds an indispensible use for one of these.

Real homemade picks are something that someone has put some thought and work into and there are may fine pickmakers on this site, I like to read and see the photos they post. but opening a thread about someone who has been picking locks since yesterday with some random wire he found is just dissappointing, I feel that I wasted my time even opening the post.

perhaps we could have a topic heading for hairpins and paper clips and this would attract all those who feel these are the best picks and I can totally avoid it.

I guess Im cranky today. :?
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

Hahaha, I agree with you ray, but even if we did have a sticky for paper clip picks the noobs wouldn't see it and post anyways.

I know what you mean though, there's nothing more motivational than seeing someone post some really freakin' awesome picks they've made. Something completely original in some sense of the word, not just the standard shapes with no handles (as functional as they are.)

Maybe we should have a best of all (Sticky). And maybe they could win a prize... This would promote people to try harder..

Rules:

You must have:
1) Images
2) Complete instructions on how to do it.
3) Must work without breaking
4) Must have wrench
5) Must mail tools to (Who ever) so they can try and judge. and S&H if you want them back. (Or Judge keeps in turn for prize)

Prize
Bogota Picks
T-Shirt
(Anything else)

Good idea? Bad Idea?

This forum should have 4 categories !!

1- When you sign up, you get to read the stickys only (for a week)

2- For the next month you get to use the search button

3- Use of the public forum

4- Advanced Forum

Ridiculous !! But some people would need that!!

In my humble opinion, this is a bad idea although I like your intent. I think that if you give posters incentive to create picks beyond their own personal drive and desire to do so, the quality will diminish to the point where the picks being created really aren't much better than a hairpin.

It would probably result in a lot of threads showcasing poorly-done home-made picks created only for the sake of being showcased, and the possibility of winning a prize. Call me a cynic, but that's what I'd anticipate.

As for NIC's post, I know what he's getting at and definitely appreciate the sentiment, but I think that is an extreme and unnecessary measure. We are fortunate to have moderators who keep things under control.

Now that I've criticized everyone else's ideas  I guess it's time to suggest my own: how about a separate section of the forum dedicated to homebrewed picks (or even better - homebrewed tools in general)? I think that if existing threads that showcase the best of them (bogota, the king/queen, etc) are moved into this proposed section, it might foster more creativity and a higher standard of workmanship. This forum section could have its own set of rules specifically stating that things like hairpins etc are not welcome. The current "Lock picks - manual" forum is a pretty general forum... maybe if the distinction was made by creating the new forum, things would change. I don't know. Food for thought.

I'm overexaggerating !! What i'm trying to say is that Threads like "how to pick with a bobby pin" or something off the sort are totally useless !! And like Raimundo i'm sick of seeing them!!

I can see you point, but its a public forum. im sure we all have a few posts from when we started we would sooner forget.

I check pretty much all the new threads but every now and then a pick made out of household junk catches my eye. i recall a video demonstration on how to make a hook pick with a rounded tip from a hair pin by bending it 45° on its side and sanding it down. with light sanding on the entire pick it would have been a very usable pick if you needed it. (had sandpaper and 30mins to spare. )

Although i do agree, i would never try and stop new users expressing them selves. after all this is a hobby that is generally looked down upon by the masses and so we will inherently attract the extravert's.

All the best

John

Oooh a BUMkey section? I bet that'd be an Advanced topic. It's probably a bypass or something. ;)

While we're ranting about posts we're tired of seeing, I'd like to throw out the "hi ne1 im teh shiznit, I pixored a master 3 padlook!!! iT oonly took me 8 hours." and "how do I open this lock that's in use and I don't own, I want to do something stupid and unethical"

Sorry, I'm probably still too much of a newb here to get to rant.

A bumpkey opens a lock, but a bumkey opens the backdoor!

Postby frizzen » 24 May 2007 5:36

Yes I get irony, but was it really nessicary to quote something used as an example of "bad and very tired of seeing this" TWICE in the post right after I stated that it was very bad and painful to read?

It hurt me to type that quotation of cr*p (much more than even reading all 305 posts containing the term "paperclip" would) and now reading that vile sentense twice more in the very next post? Why not just agree that you also hate that one? You tripled it's evil!!! :(

*goes back to lurking in the shadows*
