Which way up?

Postby WhiteHat » 8 Mar 2004 7:30

I'm interested in knowing what people's prefferences are for the direction to hold the lock when picking it.

i.e. pins pointing down, up, sideways etc.

and why...

example. personally, I prefer holding padlocks with the pins facing down simply because I can hold the lock easily between my thumb and my first two fingers of my left hand (assuming the locks turns clockwise) and manipulate the tension wrench with my pinky and ring finger.

I know that when it's the other way, the pins stay down when set propperly or jammed, but why do people preferr different ways?

I suppose I prefer it when the pins are "hanging," but as a rule, I just lock it onto whatever's handy -- a drawer handle, maybe -- without paying attention to which way is which, and then unlock it there.

I voted pins pointing up but didnt read it well enough before i did . I was thinking pins on the top, not pointing towards it. so my votes for pointing down. Matt

I always pick with locks the "American" way, with the pins pointing down. Not out of any preference, just thats the way i always have done it. I think I am going to have to try a few different orientations now.

Why sideways? is it because it takes gravity out of the equasion?

I feel its most comfortable that way. I can push the pins "up", and they stay there, so I know which ones are set. This is also true for pins pointing up, but i just feel awkward picking up upside down.
