is it the layered looking lock with that black band at the bottom? If so, I've tried that thing too. It really has a weird feel to it. Might want to leave it alone for now.

If you're starting out, best bet would be to get ahold of some master locks. Start out with some #3s and #1s. when you feel comfortable, try a #140. When you feel good with master locks, I think brinks or american is a good next step. It's a bit of a leap, but if you have patients, you could handle them. Hope this helps.

I picked one up and tried it myself a while ago and it gave me trouble too. You either can't feel anything thats going on in there or it feels like the lock is full of serrated pins.

What worked for me on these oriental enigmas was medium tension and use the hook pick to lift each pin very very very VERY slowly cos of all the false feedback you get.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

well i figured the lock out because of the cheapness of the lock thats where the difficulty came from what workes for me is high HIGH tension you should feel the plug like move till its really snug then rake from the back with asnake rake and it works about 80% of the time VERY rarely do i need to rake a second time thanks for all your help

Try giving it a couple blasts of dry film lubricant like RZ-50 into the lock. That might help make things easier too.

does the actual key still work?

Wafer style glove box locks are not going to withstand being raked the hell out of. You're bound to bend a wafer and then the original keys will be difficult to insert and turn.

Since you are new, I will tell you that most of us here, with the exception of the locksmiths who do it for a living, do not pick locks that are in use. So stay away from your PT cruiser's glove box, your front door's deadbolt, or your backyard shed's padlock. If you rake too hard and break something inside the lock, now you get to A. either buy a new lock, or B call a locksmith to get you in, and also buy a new lock. C. be in trouble with your parents, your landlord, your college facilities dept, etc.

Be gentle with your locks, and they will open. No need to force things.

I've seen some people on youtube who say they're gonna rake a Master No.3 and then they begin a 30 second assault on the lock raking and jiggling like they're using a Sawzall to cut a car in half.

Nice and easy, patiently, and light tension.

Welcome to locksport. The best hobby you're ever have!

Before you pick a lock:
The first thing that you should do is check to make sure that
the lock is your's and secondly make sure its not in use.

30 mm

Postby raimundo » 1 Jan 2008 11:23

someone gave me a little "30mm" china, brand laminated padlock, the kind I seldom mess with, and I tried the trick that is often discovered by the newbies on this site, which is to reach through the plug and manipulate the locking dog. If your lock has only one locking dog, (you can look at the shackle when its open, to see if both legs of the shackle have the cuts for the dog to fit in, if it only has this on the open side, you may be able to do this) I put a diamond pick in upside down and used the back of it to lift all the pins so that the pick shaft was at the top of the keyway then pressed it into the dog and turned slightly, (dont bend the pickshaft, just use the space available) and pressed in again and twisted it back to the to the other side of the freeplay and the thing opens every time.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!
