If you know whats going on in the lock, you don't need to see a video of someone picking.

You have to do two things.

1. Practice just feeling the pins. Feel where they are, how they feel when they move up and down. Practice with your eyes closed, and count the pins as you slide past them.
Move them up and down, feel how the springs respond as you move the pins. Then, insert the tension tool, and just slightly add tension to the plug.
Feel the difference in the pins? Notice that one catches before any others?

2. Visualize what your pick is doing with the pins as you move them up and down. Visualize where your pick is, how it is angled or twisted. As you gain experience, you will be able to tell where your pick is, and how it is turned merely by feel alone.

Watching a video will only show you what is going on OUTSIDE the lock. As you well know, we aren't that concerned with outside. We want to know what's going on INSIDE the lock. Imagine this in your mind, and your hands will follow.

Good. Now put away 12 of those. If you're just starting off, all I recomend is a small diamond and a short hook (or the larger versions, if you have a big lock or something.) The other tools in your set will be useful to you in the future, but not untill you have the hang of basic pin manipulation. Once you've picked a few locks pin-by-pin, then you can start experimenting with the other nifty tools you have.

I also recomend taking apart a deadbolt as a good learning exercise. Nothing teaches you the importance of a plug folower than trying to get those bloody springs back in their holes.

as much as I hate the mis-information - I'd recommend having a look at www.howstuffworks.com - it has some excelent moving diagrams - although don't think it's as easy as it apears on that site - it will just show you appropriate wrench placement. and that pick.... is more like something a dentist will use so ignore that too....
Oh look! it's 2016!

I don't think you are inserting the tension wrench wrong, but you may be mis-understanding the purpose of the wrench. The wrench is used to apply a rotational force upon the plug, which 'traps' (the correct term is bind) pins between the plug and the shell (housing), across the shear line. This binding situation is what's used to select the most 'bound' pin, and this is the pin which should be picked (set) first. Once the pin is set, find the next most bound pin, set it and repeat for the remaining pins in the lock.

From your description of what is happening, I suspect that you are using waaaay too much tension and trying to set an unbound pin. If you feel confident enough to do this, take all but one pin stack out of the lock and practice the feel you get from picking this one stack. Start with your view of 'normal' tension, then try to raise the pin with the pick. Slowly release the pressure on the tension wrench so that you can easily raise the pin up, but when you ease up the pressure on the pick, the pin does not pop back down.

When the pin is set, you'll feel the plug rotate. Once you can get to this stage easily with one pin stack, insert another. This time it's a little harder. You'll have to find which pin is binding the most and set that one first. You'll feel the plug rotate, then come to a stop. At this stop, the second pin will be bound, and using the same tension you applied to set the first pin, raise the second.

Start with one pin and repeat picking say fifty times.
Insert another stack and repeat fifty to a hundred times.
And so on.

A video is not really going to help you, practice is what each and every picker here, has used to get them to the level that they are at. Practice, combined with reading and fully understanding papers such as the MIT guide will get you a lot further along than a video.

Hope this helps you out and you can stick at this hobby. With a little patience, you'll be pleased at how much you progress.

I think what you need more than a video would be patience. A lot of times I get the impulse to make a cutaway or something like that too, because we has humans are such sight oriented creatures. Which is why visualizing the lock being manipulated in your head will help, it will focus your attention on the lock as well. Thats also the basics behind meditation, focusing your attention.

Take a look here for a couple of short vids, they dont show pin by pin picking but you will get the idea of the wrench http://www.justlocks.org/cd_extracts.htm

Well if you ain't got patience forget it :-)
You need loads !

I just got Varjeal's lock ( see buy and sell section on this site ) , it's pretty neat , cos you can open it and take out the pins , and put them back one at a time .

Looking at the *exploding* pad lock method , i reckon it's worth a shot.
Yeah im just mad enough to try that out :-)

You could try that file the retainer part a bit and put back one pin and the retainer held in with a bit of tape and bingo :-)

If it's worth doin , it's usually hard !

Good luck dude :-)

if you still cant get it try this (it helped me... and still does)

sit your self in a quiet room so you can hear wats going on in the lock(we all have ears for a reason) then get a small hook pick and push it all the way to back of the lock then push on the pins lighty and pull out slowly. count the clicks(witch is the pins falling back down after you push them up) now you should no how many pins are in the lock witch will help you visulize whats already inside the lock. then apply mediam to light tenion with your wrench and push up the frist pin (you should be able to see this one) untill its all the way up (as you do :) ) then count down from however many pins there is in the lock as you push the pins up... and dont be spurized if you dont get it for half an hour (thats how long my first took me) but yea just visulize the lock and you pushing up the pins as you do
If it doesn't seem to make sence, take a minuite to look at who said it... do you still want to know?
