When I began picking locks I always started with a rake. I put the rake in and would basically move it in-and-out while pulsating the tension wrench. I thought this was all that was required - I was wrong.
While it works on some locks it fails on others, or at least slows down the time in order to open it. What I learned months later was something of common sense. Instead of holding the rake at the 12 O' Clock position and moving it in-and-out, I have begun to tilt the tip of the rake downwards, as if pointing towards someone's shoes (but not quite that angled). After angling the pick, as previously mentioned, I rip the rake out with one violent motion. I realize this destroys the pins rather rapidly, perhaps as fast as bumping would, but it decreases the amount of time to open the lock rapidly compared to the raking I described as I first started out.
Try it out and let me know if it works for ya.
