Plug spins lock doens't open

Postby WolfSpring » 29 Oct 2009 8:41

I picked a 5200 today and the plug spun all the way 180 but didn't seem to catch on the release mechanism to open the shackle. I ended up having it jammed pretty good not realizing it spun, after repairing the jam I again picked it, same thing, this time I caught it quickly, brought it back, filed an old key to complete 0 line and used it to turn the plug, putting a lot of pressure toward the mechanism, it stopped when the key hit the block. now it's locked again and being a pain, my next though is to try and use a wiper blade all the way past the plug once it's picked and try to turn the mechanism, any other thoughts on this? I hope I don't have to drill the lock. This is a cut lock i found so no biggie but I still hate drilling anything.

This might be a stupid question, but have you tried spinning it the opposite direction?

I havn't due to the way the lock is set up with the key blocks only allowing it to spin in one direction, but you never know, maybe some how somone screwed around and reversed it, or worse, took it apart and a quarter or half turn more then what it needs. but worth a try.

Unless someone has taken it apart and changed cylinders (shorter-will spin 360) it should work exactly as you are doing it. If you have another 5200 watch it very closely to see exactly how far it spins and stop at exactly that point. You Can turn it too far and lock it up again. The most common problen as you have described it is that there is corrosion or sand in the shackle cutouts that will not slide smoothly on the locking balls or the shackle has been sprung (bent) in or out so as to create a lot of pressure on the shackle coming out. Or both. I assume you know that the top pins are dropping into the bottom of the keyway at 180 and must be pushed back out before it will continue to turn. Lube the heck out of it, put the shackle in a vise and pry the lock body out when the plug is in the opening position. If the shackle is bent in or out you can easily resize it and make it work well.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

I checked for sand, both parts of the shackle move freely to the left and right, at the point it should open I vice gripped both parts and tried rotating and pulling with no luck. I've taken many of these apart and fully understand how they work, and I really doubt anyone out here has manipulated the inards. It doen't look that damaged and it doesn't feel like the back end is catching. It's really wierd, maybe it is just that dirty and the actual balls are jammed, but it spins so easily, thats the part that bugs me. And OMG the dirver pins were a pain in my butt to push back down from the 180 position, I had to go a full 360 cause at 180 you can't go back becuase of the guard :x but I'll figure it out. Thanks

Got it, it was just that dang dirty. I went almost 180 and tried coming back and felt something lock and took out my 0 key and pushed inward and back a little then forward and the shakle went 360 so i pulled it out. Thanks
