New to lock picking, here is a guild on why locks get stuck 180' after picking.

So first of all well done for picking your first lock.

1. This is a lock im using.

2. These are the tools im using to open the lock.

3. Lock stuck half way.

4.Now study pic 1 and pic 3,you will see the pins you have just picked are doing nothing and the spings have pushed the pins up into the bottem of the keyway.

5.So you have to push them all down to carry on turning, like this.(i use the tension bar to push them back)

6.Now you know how to over come your problem.Have fun.

lol, no worries, probably the best "pre-emptive" write up on this subject thus far.

Nice post!

This also explains why people shouldn't pick locks that are in use - when you turn a lock cylinder 180 degrees after picking, and there are small master pins just above your (picked-to) shear line, they will fall out of the chambers into the keyway (and usually onto the floor).

This doesn't happen when you use a key, since the key fills the keyway and supports the pins.

Now you've just changed the pinning of the lock, which means either the master or user key won't work any longer.

If it's an SFIC lock sometimes none of the keys (user, master, control) will work at all!

Bad news if it isn't your lock, expensive if it is.

Learned this one the hard way on a BEST cylinder. Now I never turn the plug past 90 degrees, no matter what type of lock.

I should note that the BEST cylinder was my own, and was not in use.

So I must ask, how common is this? I've yet to have a pinned lock do this to me, although last week I had a wafer lock lock up tight on my twice. A buddy of mine that I was introducing to lockpicking managed to rake one the rest of the way. Was it doing the same thing?
