MP70 Minigard Disc Lock

Postby xanthar » 6 May 2010 11:47

Does anyone have some tips for this one? I was able to pick it a few times yesterday evening, but since the successes were a good deal apart, I gained no clear understanding of exactly what I did right. Today I have spent a good portion of the morning w/ only a sore index finger to show for it. Any comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated and welcomed.

Thanks!!

This lock usually has 5 mushroom pins, it tends to create false sets. Try backing off the tension while SPP, if you can't get the pins to raise out of the false set, you might have to turn the cylinder in the opposite direction slightly while lifting each of the pins.

well, we all get lucky, so I'm guessing you inserted a pick and raked or jiggled until the lock opened. But, from your confusion, it seems you may not actually know how a lock normally works with a real key or how the pins and springs inside work with each other in order to stop the plug from turning, or to allow it to turn.

There are some nice tutorials out there, the MIT guide is the most famous, there is also the Locksport International Visual Guide. Check them out, it will give you better insight as to what is actually happening inside the lock when you jam pick tools into the keyway.

I can't edit .. so.. Actually the lock I have is the SRX model which has the mushroom pins, I'm not certain the MP70 shares the same qualities as this one.

Thanks for the hints...I was under the impression that there were more than a couple of security pins in there. Both of my successful attempts were a result of SPP. I wanted to start practicing raking (and this seems to have turned into the perfect candidate), but wasn't sure how much I would tear things up. Well, I'll be putting the advice to work after I get home in a few hours. Again, thanks for the insight.

Best Wishes!!

Got it in about 15 seconds w/ a L-rake...depressed all of the pins and lifted up slowly whilst maintaining medium tension...back to SPP :).
