My new car has this type of lock. I've never seen it before. Is it easy to pick? I haven't tried, but I don't want to mess anything up either.

-1: the lock is in use...
-1: automotive locks are an advanced topic...
-1: this is your first post on the LP101 website...
doesn't add up to something likely to be answered...

BTW, I didn't mean to violate any etiquette rules this forum might have.
I wasn't asking on instructions on how to pick it (what fun would that be?) It was a couple of simple questions of curiosity...1. the name of this type of lock, 2. is it easy to pick? (I guess I'll find out).
I would have posted this in the automotive section, but I'm not allowed to, so I just chose a section I thought might be appropriate.

Don't pick that lock. Seriously. You can break locks when you pick them, so don't. We only have two rules - don't pick locks you don't own & don't pick locks in use.

That wasn't enough of a clue? If you're not allowed into a particular section, asking your automotive question anyway in another area of the forum is not a nice thing to do. Don't pick your cars locks just to see if you can do it. As others have already said, it can break the lock, and then how are you gonna get to work or school? Auto opening and car ignitions/door locks are not discussed in public because anyone with Google who is up to no good can find their way here and if car discussion was in the open, we would unwittingly be teaching bad guys how to get into cars. So even if you aren't up to anything dodgy, someone else down the road might be and we can't have these kinds of posts kicking around in the public arena. Squelchtone

awesome.. That's all I wanted to know BTW, mods--it might be a good idea to add some guidelines to your FAQ on posting rather than lecture newbies on it Adios.

Probably hard to read with your eyes rolling around like that, so I'll point it out for you: It's rule #19: http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?t=715Discussion of topics deemed "advanced" are reserved for the advanced forums. These topics include bypass of high security locks, safe lock manipulation, advanced pick tools, automotive bypass & picking discussion and destructive entry.

Well alas, there we have it, something actually useful for a change. Thank you. BTW, I still think it was pretty hasty to lecture someone who didn't violate any rules (unless asking for identification of a lock is deemed a "bypassing" measure ) ...nevertheless I appreciate that someone actually was nice enough to answer my question.

you NEVER asked for identification of this lock in your original post, you asked squidlock wrote:Is it easy to pick?
And the house rules were always there, they're linked in digital_blue's letter to new users when you first sign up. Try reading next time and yes, we give all new users a hard time when they ask dodgy questions. "oh look a car lock, is it easy to pick? I've never seen one like this before." Yeah mate, that's gonna make us offer up all sorts of help. daft punk Squelchtone
