Shackle Bumping?

I was going through some videos today on you tube and I was having a problem with a simple Master 40mm when I found a video on a 40mm being "shackle bumped"

The poster mentioned wizwazle, being a fan I went and looked through his vids and only found this:

I found this interesting, but no real information except the theory that the weight and vibration of the pick creates enough force to bump the lock. Is this a luck of the draw or is there some actual technique for this to work effectively? Like he sais this could be a useful tool if properly utilized.

I've got one of these sitting right here and I'm having no luck replicating it. Looks like a short hook and tension wrench placed normally though.

that is a very interesting technique to open a lock. one i have not yet seen in my short time picking locks. im very interested in how it is actually done since the videos dont really explain the concept in much detail. while very interesting to see in someones hand im curious in how it would or could actually work if the lock was fixed to something like it would be while in use.

and yes i know not to pick a lock while in use or to use this knowledge for any illegal purposes i just wanna know if its possible while the lock is attached to something.

From what I can see, it appears that the pick swinging up and down (with the focal point at the tip) is what causes the bumping. It seems like it would be acting like a snap pick from the other direction (focal point where the bow of the key would be). Something has to transfer force to the driver pins and the ideal direction to do it would be from below, with the key pins. Sitting below the key pins? The pick.

Unless the lock has no springs, or very weak springs, I can't really see that generating sufficient power to separate the pin stacks.

I'd hazard a guess that due to the simple pin layout, the pick is being rocked enough to set the pins, although the key is not shown in the first video so this theory may not be accurate. I've come across some really cheap and nasty locks before which just required the pick to be flicked a few times to set all the pins.

I second this theory. The pick handle act as counter weight and rocks the pick. As stated this trick could work with crappy locks only.

This is only a guess as I have not tried to replicate the example shown on the video. Note: we never saw the plug turn.

The sloppy tolerances of this type padlock allow the plug to turn a little. This small movement actually moves the two bolts a small amount. The pick may have been pushed to the extreme back of the keyway. It may be in contact with one or both of the tabs that pull the bolt on each side. When the shackle is bumped, both bolts are pushed inward a small bit by the V cut in the shackle. This movement creates a space that the pick tip moves into. The pick tip prevents the bolts from closing completely and may actually open them some more. The shackle springs back out and clears the bolts. Wala...the lock is open.

Maybe similar to rapping a lock open, many padlocks can be rapped open.
But I don't know if I can talk about that here.
