so i know were not supposed to pick locks we dont own, but ithought this was an exception.
me and some friends were at a camping ground, and there was an emu in a cage there. it was kind of a small cage, and he was biting the lock, so i thought it was a little inhumane. so i picked the lock and set the emu free.
im just wondering abourt the moral standpoint of this. i think it was a great thing to do and i dont regret it, but i was wondering how other lockpickers feel. was picking a lock i dont own really so bad in this case?

If it was a genetically modified radioactive super emu then good job, we're all screwed.

Hmm, what you did was illegal and probably punishable by the law, are you the cops? Are you above the law? If you see something like this, notify law enforcement. Don't be stupid.

How long do you think that emu will survive on its own in the woods?

I personaly think in that case it was fine. . . . Animal cruelty should not be tolerated at all. .You should of locked the douch bag up that put the emu in there. . .Dont wory i think God Knew if you ment good. . . . I actually belong to a club "save the emu's" haha just kidding. Just my point of view

maybe they kept the emu in that cage so they could clean out its big cage... you dont know the circumstances... this was still wrong, im aginst animal cruelty as much as the next guy but there seemed to be nothing that suggested it in this case... it was possible animal cruelty... call the proper athrities... dont take it upon urself to let that emu go die somewhere else... it prolly got hit by a car thanks to you...

envy253: keep it up with the crap posts and trolling, and you'll be banned here like you have been from other forums.
Maybe you should go solve a Rubik's cube or something and work off those teenage hormones.

+ 1, I am amazed that some people on here think that was this guy did was ok? Hello?? We are not supposed to be picking locks that don't belong to us period, not only that, this was not life or death, you can't just take it upon yourself to set caged animals free like some earth firster tree hugger just because in your opinion somebody was doing something wrong.

I bet that "cage" was more like a 2x2 - 4x4 foot night (sleeping) pen... Do you know anything about domesticated wildlife/farm animals/birds? Do you have any clue what a aviary is? Do you have any clue how small a sleeping roost can be for birds with it being completely humane? Don't think there is any easy way to say this.. grow up. Oh and that emu you set free... I can almost say with certainty its dead. Domesticated/semi domesticated birds cannot survive at night in the wild.

I held off replying on this initially cause I didn't want to post an aggressive response..
I think the OP made a snap decision that in hind sight, he now sees was the wrong thing to do.. This situation could have gotten a lot worse (Emu is freed, Emu runs onto road, Car swerves to avoid, rolls in ditch, and driver dies..)
Just like with Lock picking, the best thing to do would have been to do your home work first before you acted.. Find out if this was in fact "legal" or "ethical" treatment of the animal, and then take the APPROPRIATE action.. Putting an animal in jeopardy by releasing it, can be just as bad as inhuman treatment (IF this was the case.. the only people to make this call would be a local Vet/Ministry type person).
Lesson learned I think...
