Oversetting and binding Q

Postby muad-dib » 23 Feb 2011 19:47

I'm only working on my 4th lock and I've had some problems with it because I was told that if one pin stack is overset, the rest won't bind. To me, it doesn't seem like that's necessarily true. If a lock with spools is in false set and a stack with a narrow bottom pin is over set, couldn't that allow the next most binding spool to still give some feedback? I think that's what has been happening to me with this lock. Had I thought about that sooner, I might have saved myself an hour or so on this lock!

If you've overset a security driver, then yes you can still get tons of feedback from the lock and be able to set some of the other pin stacks. Same can go for when a narrower bottom pin is pushed up pasted the shearline but the feedback you'd get from the other pin stacks in that situation will be much more subtle to say the least.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

I realize that this may be an obvious solution to suggest, Muad-Dib, but have you considered simply using your Weirding ways to burst open the lock?

Im not sure if u correctly understand what overset means. . .it means that a key pin wil bind and not fall back down. If ur key pin is thin it probably wont bind and u can push it up as much as u want and it would just fall down. .im not to sure what u mean by a thin bottom pin. Do u just mean thin in terms of binding order? If u hav an overset botom pin "keypin" u wont hav a complete false set in my understanding
