Masterlock No.140 question

Postby BbGenesis » 11 Jul 2011 12:06

Hello everyone,
I've recently been struck by the picking bug (I kinda got discouraged when I lost my favorite half diamond pick that I made.) Anyway I found my picks again the other day and went and bought a No.140 masterlock since I knew without a doubt that the No.3 was childs play. Anyway I've picked it twice so far but the security pin is giving me headaches. After I've got all the other pins set I go to lift the security pin and anyway sometimes I feel like I let off too much tension and I hear pin/pins falling back down but then as soon as I lift the security pin the lock turns about a 1/8th of an inch, that should mean that all the other pins are still set right? I guess the question I was meaning to ask is "will the lock turn like that if some of the other pins minus the security pin aren't set?"

Thanks for the help everyone, this place is awesome. It's coming back to me but really slowly haha.

sorry for back to back posts, I couldn't find the edit button. Also sorry if this is the wrong forum for this topic, I didn't think it would go well in any other sub forum though.

Anyway I've got another question: Does anyone know what kind of security pins are in this? I was under the impression that it just had a spool at the third pin but I found an old post about this lock on here and everyone seemed to have different opinions on what was in it, some were saying it had 2 spools and a serrated pin but I just don't feel like that sounds right because all the pins set super easy except for one that I never can get to set just right on the first try.

Thanks again guys.

Sounds more like your setting the other pins, and not the security pin of the lock is turning about 10 degrees.

As far as what's inside it, I've got no idea.

I have a couple 131's that are the same setup.

I'll say this -- they have an OBSCENE amount of travel in the plug's binding rotation. And while you can often have your choice of up to 3 pins to bind first, if you drop it into false set it might lock it up beyond what you can recover from without slacking way off tension.

On both of mine, I have to press Pin 1 down but stop short of setting it, then work on some of the back ones before coming back to fully set Pin 1.

My advice is to play with pressing a binding pin not quite to shear (or false set), move to others that bind, then come back to your original pin and complete its set.

Honestly I think what made these a challenge when I was learning to pick is that they're so sloppy and have so much plug rotation during the process, that its very different from both a standard #3 and a higher security (like an American). The good news is that because they're so sloppy (and only 4 pins), the chances are pretty good that you'll get lucky even using haphazard poking around with a hook.

FWIW, I haven't raked them successfully though, probably because of the exaggerated false sets you get with them.

Youtube Video of a 140 cutaway.

There are also lots of SPP vids for the 140 on Youtube.

Like a lot of noobs I haven't been able to get the 140. I got discouraged, saw the video you linked to and decided to cut mine open, too. Like the one in the video it had 3 spools and one serrated driver. I went out and got myself a M530 at Home Depot and I can't get that one either, although I have no problem with a #3. It looks like I can get the cylinder out of the 530 (there's a screw under the shackle), so at least I won't have to sacrifice it if I want to see what's holding me up. I am a long time academic, now easing into retirement while I write a book (I do research on cancer clusters), so this hobby (along with Arduino) is great for me. I also really appreciate the expertise here and the vast amount of accrued experience. Thanks to all.
