I've been progressing really quickly in my picking thanks to all the help on this forum (especially Squelchtone). Finally have got picking the abus 83/45 down, and I never thought I'd be able to do it. Things i've learned (and i'm kind of just summarizing things in my head, here)...
1. You're never going to progress at SPP until you can feel each pin with the pick. Sounds easy, but for me it took a TON of practice. I really started getting the hang of SPP when someone on the forum recommended applying heavy tension and letting the pick glide over the pins until you hit a "speed bump" (the binding pin). That was a great way to learn and a great explanation.
2. Tension is just as important as good picking, if not more so. To me, I think it's more important in raking because in SPP you can vary tension easily as you go from pin to pin (another huge step for me was learning to vary tension on each pin...after I learned that, security pins got MUCH easier.)
Hope this helps anybody totally new to picking...once you get semi-decent at SPP things get really fun!
