SNEAKEY Key Bumping

Postby itpick » 2 Jan 2012 11:56

Hi to all

Sorry for my bad English ... thanks

taking a cue from this: http://vision.ucsd.edu/~blaxton/sneakey.html

I was wondering if someone would be able to copy even double bit key (or other safes ... for example a Mauer 11 lever) from a simple photo?

for example this lock: http://www.azannunci.eu/classified.php? ... sata-.html
http://1010security.com/mm5/merchant.mv ... BITS&Menu=

I think that this method puts a severe test security... if so be there to be careful to put the key away from prying eyes

thanks for the answers! This forum is very useful, not only for those who practice this hobby, but also for those who want to improve their safety!

In general, yes: it is possible for that type of key. If you can measure the depth of the cuts then the cuts can be duplicated... and, for many standard keys, measuring off of a good digital photograph can be accurate enough to properly read the depths.

I didn't click on the link but I think that you are talking about copying a key from a photograph,
you will have to consider the angle of the photograph because angles to the plane of the photographic medium cause forshortening of measurements.

The way to read this type of thing is to make a measurement of the known dimensions like the length of the key and the width of the bow, and the width of the key blank at the shoulder.

with the two measurements, one set obtained from a blank of the key itself, and another being measurements lifted from the photograph with a compass/dividers,
compare the measurements of length and width in the photos to the actually dimensions on the key,
the difference will reflect the % of difference between the tilted object in the photo and the actual keyblank, apply these same percentages to the cuts of the key.
Use standard spacing obtained from another original key to that type of keyway.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

The experimental software they wrote did a pretty good job of doing exactly that:

Their paper's worth a read; their software isn't ready for commercial production (or, at least, it wasn't at the time they wrote their article)... but they've done a good job of thinking about how to tackle a lot of the practical problems of reading measurements from a photograph.

I think the process is the same ... but also locks the keys of this type (images) can be copied with such ease?

I can not get the pictures... the safe is this: http://www.azannunci.eu/classified.php? ... sata-.html
in the link at the bottom there are a series of photos, even of the key

I'd agree: that's probably not ideal. (More knowledgeable sellers will often blur out part of the bitting on the key, to prevent people from determining the cuts.)
