SFIC pinning tool design?

Postby unjust » 8 Feb 2012 14:10

so pondering various tools i don't have that would be useful while working on the mill last night, it occurred to me that a sfic decoding/pinning block would be a pretty straight forward build. square it up, put a big hole in, flip it about, put a few wee holes in...

i was wondering about material though. all of them that i've seen are in aluminum, at i was wondering if there was a reason to not cut one out of plastic. thoughts?

I can see aluminium lasting longer in there and not suffering the same aging that plastic undergoes into after a few years (elastic -> cracking). Or again it's a manufacturer's choice (by liking or manufacturing needs, i.e. a hot process or need to machine all the parts by himself without having to build a separate workshop for plastic works), pistols were all metal until Glock came up with a new concept :)

Cheers

well, it's slowly progressing out or a chunk of aluminum bar stock, and it's a slow process, in part due to it having been years since i did anything on a mill, so i'm getting back into the swing of it, but as i get farther along in it, it becomes obvious that the way to do this is with cast bodies that have a few holes milled in them. of course not having the castings...
