Alternating Brass/Steel Pins Problem

Postby s3curity » 24 Aug 2014 9:47

I have a series of practice locks. Lock one I can pick literally with one hand I tried it.

Lock five? Keyed the same but I simply have not been able to pick it at all no matter what, single pick, raking, any and all kinds appropriate of picks, very careful tensioning, BOK, TOK, pick both directions, everything I can think of. The only difference it seems is that it has alternating brass/steel pins. What can I do differently?

Any input on this?

Thanks.

Have you tried picking it in the other direction? I had a starter set of practice locks and for some reason they would never pick clockwise but they pick counter clockwise. Other than that try taking out some pins and once you get it open add them back in 1 at a time. I have had locks that I could not open fully pinned, very frustrating. So I took out a couple pins and got it picked. Then added in pins as I got comfortable with the lock until the lock was fully pinned. If it's giving you that hard of a time gradually work your way up. You could also lubricate the lock with some Triflow, Locksaver, etc (Don't use WD40).

I would agree with the above suggestion .. But I do have a couple of questions ..

What kind of feedback are you getting from Lock 5..What set of practice locks do you own... Are all the Locks pinned with 5 pins or there an increasing number of pins when you go from Lock 1 to Lock 5 ..

If it is a commercial available practice set the progression may be from simple key/driver pins to more and more difficult security pins..
When I finally leave this world.. Will someone please tell my wife what I have REALLY spent on locks ...

Yes thanks Divinorum I have tried picking opposite direction. I guess I need to take out pins.

These are from Core group. Pretty sure they are the same until lock) 6 (different pinning). I have only looked at the pins top and bottom on lock 5.

OK, Yes they do have increasing pins. My bad.

I just grabbed a different tension wrench than I have been using for a quick try and it opened. Must have hit it just right.

Thank you all for your help!
