What locks for intermediate picker?

Postby nine4t4 » 9 May 2016 16:09

I've been picking locks casually for a few years now, and I'm hitting the point where it's time to raise the bar. Here's where I'm at:

Hardware store stuff with security pins like Brinks, Schlage, American Lock, etc. I have lots Kik cylinders with lots of spools and serrated's with Kwikset or Schlage keyways.

I don't think I'm ready for Medeco or equivalent levels, so what should I be looking for? I tend to hunt Ebay aiming for the most locks for my money. You get a lot of the same stuff, and it's boring.

What should someone that is at this level be considering as the next level. Difficult but not insurmountable? I don't mind spending money on a lock as long as it's more than a few nights of challenge

Repin a few of your existing locks with worst case scenario, with horrible bitting and whatever security pins you have the most problems with.

You can always start learning to pick Medecos by gutting one and starting with just one pin, and working up from there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJRdzs6KYXI
That should be more than a few nights challenge. :)

Another option is to make friends with a few locksmiths and see what weirdness they have stored away in the depths of their stores.

Maybe the high security offerings from abus?
You could search around for more stuff from the assa abloy group.
Probably going to keep getting the same boring stuff from ebay lock lots, but Id keep an eye out for higher end locks that get bulk bought then they realize they have way too many or the customer changes their mind.
Theres always the IC offerings, like SFIC and LFIC locks.

Maybe change it up, if you've been doing pin tumblers exclusively, give dimple locks a shot?

Oh yes! Dimple locks can be quite a challenge. Master lock makes a good one for starting out.

Mul-t-lock Classics would be a reasonable step up.
