In short, you put the tension wrench wherever you can fit it. Sometimes it is tricky to get it so it's not in the way--handles on some filing cabinets or storage lockers do this occasionally. You might try putting the tension wrench on the same side as the pins (the top, typically). Try it again on the bottom. Anything that'll work, because it varies from lock to lock.
Also, if you're picking an unusually small lock, your tension wrench may be a bit big for it.
Good luck with your new set. If I find any pictures, I'll post them here.

I have a horribly small Buffo lock that the tnesion wrench wouldn't fit. In the end I was able to pick it with just the half diamond, doubling it as a tension wrench. Fiddly as anything though, not an experience I relished. But I just had to pick it, so I could defeat it.

if you try picking with the a pick and no tension wrench, be warned, if you're not very experienced or a bit heavy handed, it can be very easy to bend or snap a pick. just a little warning for you...

I would not recommend using your pick for a tension wrench. This habit will end up getting your picks broken when facing tighter tolerence locks. They sell slimline tension wrenches out there and they work great as long as you do not overdo the tension. The same with picks, they also sell slimline picks. Good luck, and congradulations on your new pick set.
Lock picking is an art, not a means of entry.
